Persistant EGR code

Im having a bit of a problem with my egr throwing a code on me....i took it off and cleaned it out a couple of times.....each time i clean it out, the check engine light goes out for a day and a half and comes back....i was told by a local shop to just block off the egr port and remove the vaccum lines....all of them are still in tact right now, i was just wondering what you all might think....(i hate that damn red light in the dash....) hope you can help me out....

-You might want to check out the EGR solenoid locate on the firewall also.
