hey everyone.. this is one for people with car starters.

ok i have been thinking about installing a car starter for my car. me and a couple of friends were just sitting down talking about cars. when someone across the street starts his car with one of those car starters. one of my friends who was there said that its bad on the car if you use it constantly or alot. i asked him why? and he said how he was reading it online on a forum. but he cant remember the exact reason, he said he would go look for it again, but i doubt he is going to go look.

at first i looked and laughed; because i never heard of anything like that before. i was wondering has anyone heard starting your car alot like on a daily basis wit a remote car starter is bad for you car? and if it is bad, what are you damaging.

Rule #1: "Friends" don't know shit about cars.

The only thing that'd be "bad" for it is starting in gear, or near a car thief who'll pop a window and take it. The car really doesn't care if there's a bag of meat sitting inside when it starts.

^^^not always, cause most of the remote starters ive seen will shut the car off if the brakes are applied, if the clutch is dropped or the ebrake is dropped just for that very reason. you have to physically put the keys in the ignition to disarm the auto-kill, so you can drive it.

thanks defiant i was laughing as hard as i can when my friend told me that  . i couldnt believe it, and since i had no way to prove him wrong i came on here to ask you guys and have something i can show him. i should have thought about what you said

thanks again defiant :thumb:

The biggest problem with remote car starts is if something goes wrong, it makes life for you HELL.

My alarm/remote autostart system had some kind of "bug" that I never quite ironed out - but the remote autostart was putting a constant drain on the battery, even when not activated - but things got worse, and the system was psycho - not allowing me to use the KEY to turn the car on, disabling the starter, then locking the starter "ON".

Just make sure you get someone who knows what the hell they're doing install the blasted thing, is my biggest advice. Wiring problems suck.

They do operate silmilar to the TT setup. If it is put in gear of ebrake released it shuts off.

However there is a reason in most states remote starters on mual cars are illegal. I have seen 4 cars hit buildings after the owner comes out of a store/bar/resturaunt and start it not realizing it is in gear.

must be a real cheap one if it doesn't have a brake pedal cut-off (when you first tap the brakes the R/S looks to see if the key has been put into the ign yet or not. if not, car shuts down)

All I can say is get some place to install it for you I installed mine myself and it was harder than to rebuild my engine. It sucked ass, but it is nice to get into a warm car in the morning. But mine quit for some reason, everything works and it gets the signal to start but it just does not do anything. So i have to take it someplace that they can look at it.

I do mine pretty much everyday and yes I do have a manual. The only thing you have to watch out for is leaving it in gear. The only problems ive had is warning friends when they play around with my clutch is not to leave it in gear. My solution is just to never remote start it whenever my friends have been near the car. Also, and yes ive done this and yes you feel incredibly stupid. I remote start get in the car and forget to put the keys in and start to drive the car and two seconds later while im pulling out of the parking spot the car dies and im like  . Oh yeah!!!! feel retarded like I just stalled out or something and continue on my way. Oh btw most remote starters have a turbo timing function, I love this feature, saves me 100 dollars and the hassle of installing a turbo timer.

Ok, when my friend got his remote installed he got a compustart 2 way one with the little screen and stuff. Anyways, they something in it so that if you leave it in gear, the car wont start. period. It doesnt even turn over, and the remote vibrates and one of the little logo's flashes. Guy at a local shop here said they have to have the thing that makes it so it wont start in gear(any gear) for it to be legal. If that makes any sense to anyone else but me.

paul.

Yeah I have the compustar one aswell . And for it to be able to start you have to shut it off in a sequence so that the remote start funtion is activated, but once you shut it off you can still bump it in gear and start it but your e-break has to be on for it to start so it still wont go anywhere.

That's true, but I also think it's good to have a cold, miserable car reminding me not to romp on it until the heater's working well. But I'm old, and forget things. Like the time I ....uh.... lessee, now, what the hell was that ......

Then again, we don't really know much about cold around here. We think 30°F qualifies.

Well whats nice is while the car is heating up the car, its heating up the engine too so sometimes by the time you get in your car the car is at normal operating temp and you dont have to worry bout romping on it.

The engine oil and coolant are. But the wheel bearing grease, transmission lube, transfer case, rear end and other assorted rolling bearings are still dead-cold. I know, it's trivia. But for some people, driving is being in church.

"That'd"?!?

How far in the country do you live?

Wow defiant, I hadnt thought of that, damnit im an idiot. Oh well, not like I romp on my car anywayz. Plus ive only had the gsx during the winter so far, but it is fine in the snow :D .
Now that you told me that im gonna be just a little bit more careful. I cant even afford to get my car inspected which is due tomorrow.

before that, make sure you park it in the garage, let it run for a half hour then go in the garage and check and double check your tire pressure...

Never heard of the contracted "that would" in your big city there? Or are the schools in Jersey actually worse than the ones in California?

But thanks for throwing the whole train off the track.

Hahah thats why its nice to have both the garage remote AND security remote in your room :D . Wake up and get into a car thats not 10 degrees.

I installed mine myself and it was a pain in the ass. The wiring wasn't that bad for me, but I have experience with that. The thing that sucked was programming it once it was all installed. With mine all the programming is done through horn honks and light flashes, it gets confusing. The best part of it though is that it has a turbo timer.
