My laptop just pooped out. Anyone here running dsmlink v2 on their palm? I noticed it would be cheaper to buy a palm on ebay then trying to pick up another laptop.

I was also wondering what else would be needed to run the palm since my laptop had the db9 port?

Laptops are dirt cheap on ebay, I bought one last week for $141 shipped

My hard drive went in it, and when I was carrying it to my buddies place next door to look at it I dropped it and the screen broke and cd drive fell out. Its an old IBM Thinkpad so I thought going a different route might be cheaper. My gma gave it to me and she had orginally bought it off the back of a truck for $50 LOL.

Palm's can be had for like 30-50 on ebay, and if all it takes is a cable to get it working proper...it seems to be a cheaper route.

Whats a null modem?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem said:
Null modem is a communication method to connect two DTEs (computer, terminal, printer etc.) directly using a RS-232 serial cable. The RS-232 standard is asymmetrical as to the definitions of the two ends of the communications link so it assumes that one end is a DTE and the other is a DCE e.g. a modem. With a null modem connection the transmit and receive lines are crosslinked. Depending on the purpose, sometimes also one or more handshake lines are crosslinked. Several wiring layouts are in use because the null modem connection is not covered by a standard.

Cliffs: it lets your ECU talk to the Palm. You could feasibly make your own actually, but they're like 5 bucks from Radioshack.

Don't forget a serial hotsync cable for the Palm. So, you'll have

OBD-II Port -> DSMLink cable -> Null Modem Adapter -> Serial HotSync Cable -> Palm

Just remember, you can't do everything with the Palm that you can with the laptop version of the software.

Ok, from looking on ebay I found that a palm is around 40, then null modem like 10, and a serial hotsync cable for like 15. That puts me a 65 for the whole setup, seems like a good deal.

What is different between the software for the palm and laptop? I have a base street tune. I more less just need to log in case things are going wrong. I have access to another laptop if need be. I just wanted something I could carry around and not have to bum off my gf for her laptop.

Palm operation is WAY better than a laptop while logging. I haven't run a laptop in my car for over 5 years. I only use my laptop for reviewing logs. The palm will do it too though not as easily. They both have their places.

There is a PocketPC application written for V2, but not for V3. I checked the forums and your PocketPC must have the ability to accept a serial cable and has to support different baud rates, which is looks like some do not.

Based on the thread over on DSMLink, some work and some don't.

You can check the thread if you want more information. It's in the "Palm/PocketPC" forum.

Thanks man. Yea I read that thread also. I was just wondering if maybe someone on tuners had tried this pocket pc in general. I ordered a sserial hotsync cable for it and will order a null modem shortly. It will only cost me like $20 to give it a try so we'll see how it goes and I will keep this updated if it does or doesn't work.
