ok its going to be painted black and im doing it myself. Its is originally laguna blue metallic, and i need to do some minor metal work. i was planning on doing 2 bases and 2 clears. so here are my questions:

1. is the original paint polyurethane, enamel, or lacquer?
2. can urethane be applied over any of the above?
3. how much base is needed per coat, how much clear/coat?
4. what kind of primer surfacer is best for bare metal and can overlap our original type of paint. (for the small body repairs that will be ground down to bare metal)

thanks in advance and bare with me im a paint newb

You need to get some books or find someone knowlegable about painting if you are doing this your first time. There are too many things to cover in a forum post. In short, many of your questions will be answered by the manufacturer of your new paint. Look to their literature for answers. Every paint maker is different. PPG says to do some things while duPont will contradict PPG. Are either wrong? No, that is how they have formulated their products.

Basically, if you have sound OEM paint, you can scuff it and paint right over it. You don't want to strip to bare metal. Any areas that are sanded to bare metal need etching primer. The factory paint is base/clear, but I can't say whether it is poly or not. Probably is--it doesn't really matter. It is not lacquer. Yes, poly can be applied over the above paints (not sure about lacquer, but enamel and poly are okay) according to manufacturer literature. How much base and clear will depend on what product you use. You may want to seal the whole car if you are doing a bunch of body work or if you are significantly changing the color. There are so many variables. What grit sandpaper you use to scuff the car can determine if the new paint sticks or not. Lots of details.

You know you are going to spend probably 500-800 on paint and supplies. It can be an expensive education. Get someone to help you or go pay someone to paint it for you. Maybe you can do the bodywork and get it just the way you want it, debadge the whole car and then deliver to somone else to shoot the paint. That is an alternative. Good luck.

yes you can paint over your paint with urethane paint. Would highly suggest sanding it down (not to bare metal) before you start spraying new paint right on your old clear coat.

Go here http://www.layitlow.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=131465 its a low rider forum but some good details on painting. good luck
