Whats up everyone? I'm getting my turbo kit for the 2g ready, i bought a used 14b, it is in good shape, but not as far as looks go, its nasty and roughed up, someone told me i should paint it, cant find anything if anyone has done it, someone told me even the 1500 degree paint would burn off, any tips anyone?

Whatcha think? How good's that paint?

You won't see it under its heatshield, anyway. Refer to above illustration regarding why a heat shield's a very good idea.

I have my manifold, downpipe to the flex, O2 housing, recirced dump tube and turbine hot side all coated with VHT flameproof. I used plenty of thin coats and the stuff is extremely durable. I have no flaking or peeling issues and it repeatedly stands up to the excessive heat the turbo generates. Straight out of the can, it's good to 2000 degrees.

Even high temp powdercoat won't handle the heat so I would recommend HPC Coatings for a more permanent solution:

Hope that helps,

Andy

I myself would recommend Powder & Performance Coatings. I knew the owners daughter from school and my buddy had all his turbo piping, manifold, etc high heat coated there, plus they have a very reasonable price. www.powderguys.com, 440-735-2628

take a wire brush and some elbow grease to it to remove that rusty look or a wire spin wheel and a drill.

I could find out what John Deere uses....They paint all their engines and turbos yellow, and its a nice thick looking job. Doesnt look like powder coat, but perhaps it is.

There is always jet hot (think thats what its called). I would just go Andy's route since powder coating, and jet hot are expensive, and the fact that your heat shields should be on covering these items like Defiant said...if you want to know why we say keep those heatshields on just search "melted fan blades". I have also seen a pic of Andy's engine bay after this was done and it looked great.

The temperature pictures shows the maximum temperature at less than 500 degrees. Now if the picture wrong or does the turbo really not get that hot?

It's not listed at what point that picture was taken. The car had most likely either just warmed up, or been driven lightly a short distance. The others with the red-hot turbo/manifold have been driven on pretty hard, and or for long periods of time.

You can paint the compressor side of the turbo, although I wouldn't recommend it.
The exhaust side should not be painted.. Even ceramics are abused when you hit high EGTs...

I've used 1800 degree header paint, and haven't had a problem yet. I put it on to stop the rusting and it hasn't melted, burned, chiped or peeled off yet. I picked up 2 cans at NAPA, I don't remember the name, and I don't have a can laying around. I put on about 8-10 thin coats, and let it dry inbetween.

I have a ceramic coated hotside on a a bullseye turbo. It fades, gets a bit dull, but stays on ok.. If you get it really hot (high EGTs) it will flake... I can't recommend paint personally, but I don't suppose it can hurt anything.
