Hey guys at wits end.

I get to my car for the first time in 6 months tonight, i get in fire it up no problems other than the typical lifter tick...... go to turn my steering wheel ti moves may a quarter turn and starts jerking followed by a loud squeel from the pump area..... go to turn the other way and say thing get about a quarter turn and squeel...... im thinking it is the power steering pump but am not 100% sure...... anybody shed some insight on this issue????

check your fluid level... belt tension?

Definately the power steering..., pop the hood and give it an inspection. Im sure youll find something noticeable like a loose belt or low brake fluid. Get back if you find anything.

Fluid is good, dont know about tension will check when i get home, where would you tighten that belt, i know on the alternator belt you adjust the tension on the alternator.

I'm assuming you have the same PS pump as the factory 4g63t (all 2.0l pumps should be the same through '94; in fact, I think at least some of the 1.8l cars used that same pump)...

There's one bolt at the back of the pump at the bottom, and two on the face under the pulley that mount the pump to the bracket. The pulley has slots that you can slip a 14mm socket through it to get at the bolts on the front.

With the bolts loose, you can use a pry bar between the pump and the front motor mount to pull outward on the pump and put tension on the belt. Then re-tighten the bolts. I usually leave the front bolts finger loose and just tighten the rear bolt once the belt is snug...then torque down the front bolts.

You may also want to look into rebuilding the pump. It's easy and cheap, and is probably long over due.

CALAN about how long does it take to do the rebuild?

Says at the bottom a couple hours. but it all just depends on the tools and experience you have.

What Kyle said. It really depends on how fast you work and how much cleaning and detailing you do to it, but it's not hard at all. It just requires attention to detail and being able to keep track of small parts.

Shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes for a basic rebuild once it's on the bench.
