Well, this was one of those days where nothing goes right.
I start the morning off nice and early at 6am to go wash the car and get ready. I get everything ready to go, packed in the car, and it won't start!!
So I try starting it again and again, it sputters and immediately dies. After a couple tries the electrical system grows a mind of its own and starts flickering lights on and off the dash and just acting plain wierd. Running out of time I call my friend Steve who runs an H Stock Talon and tell him what's going on, he says he'll be right over to pick me up and i can run his car today!!
What a great guy!!
We get to the event and begin putting on his slicks on his 91 n/a Talon. Right away I manage to strip a wheel stud half way down. Luckily it still has enough thread to make it work. I go and talk to the other drivers in my class about running this car in my class (E Prepared) so I can get my points. At first the one guy has a problem with this, I'm like WTF?? It's an H Stock car. After some talking he decides it's ok. This was nice of him considering I have the points lead right now and this doesn't help him out at all.
So now I get my new camcorder out and mount and begin to try and mount it up. It's a simple 3 cup suction cop mount that only moves on 2 axis. I can't get it in a good place to see anything at all!! Now I'm just completely annoyed. We manage to get a decent enough angle in a friends Civic Si to film him and I got some exterior shots. I'll have the video up later this week.
It's an interesting course design, out of the start you make a sharp left onto the course, a quick S and then a wide right sweeper with a huge dip in the apex!! Then is a loop you take to the right and make a long left around in a circle and back onto the first part of the course, so now it's a left with the dip in the apex, then a quick S and 90 degree left. Next is a 3 cone slalom upon exiting you have to button hook to the right to make about a 150 degree left turn, then a long dual apex right, and a fast chicane to the finish. The video will show this a lot better, I suck at explaining this stuff!!
This Talon isn't too different from my car, it has used Hoosiers, and agx shocks. So it grips as well as my car, just is nowhere near as responsive.
My first run I pace myself as I've never driven this car before. I clip a cone here and there and finish with a 50.1 sec run. 2nd lap is a little faster as I adapt to the car and run a 49.7. Runs 3 and 4 are also 49.7's plus a cone or 2. My last run I go without a passenger and concentrate hard and knock a full second off, getting down to a 48.7 I finish off happy, I improved and got my points in!!
Funny thing is, my buddies best time in this car was a 49.7!! I beat him in his own car by a full second!! He took it well though, I've been doing this a couple years and he just started last year. He did make me promise if I win my class this year I owe him dinner, which I will gladly do because he may of saved my year!!
This is what I love about the DSM community, people always willing to help each other out. Now I just have to call AAA in the morning to get a tow to the shop!!
