Well, this was one of those days where nothing goes right.

I start the morning off nice and early at 6am to go wash the car and get ready. I get everything ready to go, packed in the car, and it won't start!! So I try starting it again and again, it sputters and immediately dies. After a couple tries the electrical system grows a mind of its own and starts flickering lights on and off the dash and just acting plain wierd. Running out of time I call my friend Steve who runs an H Stock Talon and tell him what's going on, he says he'll be right over to pick me up and i can run his car today!!:thumb: What a great guy!!

We get to the event and begin putting on his slicks on his 91 n/a Talon. Right away I manage to strip a wheel stud half way down. Luckily it still has enough thread to make it work. I go and talk to the other drivers in my class about running this car in my class (E Prepared) so I can get my points. At first the one guy has a problem with this, I'm like WTF?? It's an H Stock car. After some talking he decides it's ok. This was nice of him considering I have the points lead right now and this doesn't help him out at all.

So now I get my new camcorder out and mount and begin to try and mount it up. It's a simple 3 cup suction cop mount that only moves on 2 axis. I can't get it in a good place to see anything at all!! Now I'm just completely annoyed. We manage to get a decent enough angle in a friends Civic Si to film him and I got some exterior shots. I'll have the video up later this week.

It's an interesting course design, out of the start you make a sharp left onto the course, a quick S and then a wide right sweeper with a huge dip in the apex!! Then is a loop you take to the right and make a long left around in a circle and back onto the first part of the course, so now it's a left with the dip in the apex, then a quick S and 90 degree left. Next is a 3 cone slalom upon exiting you have to button hook to the right to make about a 150 degree left turn, then a long dual apex right, and a fast chicane to the finish. The video will show this a lot better, I suck at explaining this stuff!!

This Talon isn't too different from my car, it has used Hoosiers, and agx shocks. So it grips as well as my car, just is nowhere near as responsive.
My first run I pace myself as I've never driven this car before. I clip a cone here and there and finish with a 50.1 sec run. 2nd lap is a little faster as I adapt to the car and run a 49.7. Runs 3 and 4 are also 49.7's plus a cone or 2. My last run I go without a passenger and concentrate hard and knock a full second off, getting down to a 48.7 I finish off happy, I improved and got my points in!!

Funny thing is, my buddies best time in this car was a 49.7!! I beat him in his own car by a full second!! He took it well though, I've been doing this a couple years and he just started last year. He did make me promise if I win my class this year I owe him dinner, which I will gladly do because he may of saved my year!!

This is what I love about the DSM community, people always willing to help each other out. Now I just have to call AAA in the morning to get a tow to the shop!!

Good write up.

The part where you beat your friends time. That happened to me. I have been fighting my car since I purchased it and I have not been real comfortable driving it yet. I let a good friend and a great driver take it out during the fun runs after the event. He beat my best time by a second. I took it back out and ran a few more fun runs and ended up getting the second fastest time of the day, but it didn't count.

Hopefully you figure out your electrical issues. That's always a bummer the morning before a race or during a race. Electrical issues are my worst nightmare? I hate them especially when intermittent.

My budfy was cool about being beat in his car, he hasn't been doing this very long and this was his first time driving on R compounds. He just got the tires and shocks on 2 days prior!!
I'm waiting on a tow truck as I type this so hopefully the car will be running again this afternoon, I hate electrical!!!

How could anyone stop you from running a N/T DSM in D/Prepared? It's not like you lacked a required intake restrictor.

As to being beat in your own car: Sam Strano comes to many of our events. It was, therefore, an easy decision to buy the smallest seats possible.

It's my understanding these cars are classed in E Prepared, that's where I've been running all year long and have all my points. Besides, there's nobody in DP.
My car is basically an FSP car if it weren't for the interior being removed. I'm nowhere the limit of FSP, let alone EP, but it's no fun being by yourself!!

This is why I like being 6'3" tall. My seat is custom made for me and only a couple of people could drive it, so it's unlikely anyone will be beating me in my car!! I told my buddy if he didn't want to get beat either get seats that only fit him, or simply not let anyone drive it!! But it can be a huge help letting a better driver drive your car, I learned a lot from it last year.

I'm 6' 6-1/2"... I tell people if they can fully depress the pedals they can drive the car. I have yet to have a taker :D

Please tell me your coming to Nationals then Greg!!! I'll get those pedals down!!:D

On a good note, I just picked up an ECU for the car. $50 for it!! Man I love the dsm community! My friend Steve without question lets me race his Talon, then my friend Ryan who has a 1g and a 2g finds me an ECU and even drives me the hour to go get it!! :dsm:

I would love to say we're coming out this year. It would be cheaper for me to fly you out here for a race. The $6,000.00 we originally expected turned out to be $10,000.00 for the race! Way beyond what we expected for the week. As a matter of fact over half the West Coast Nasa racers have cancelled because the expenses got to high. We're setting up next year for the Nationals to be the priority. Hopefully there may be some contingency money to bring the top cars from the West Coast out as well... We're even thinking about a NASA Watkins Glen visit for 2007...

Off topic here but I've seen pics of you and wondered how you fit with a cage in your car? I'm only 6'0" and I'm leaning towards only getting a four point rollbar because I don't have any headroom with a helmet on. I run Sparco America seat/sparco slider/sparco mounts, I know I can lose the slider and gain maybe an inch but my head rests on the frame now so with a 1 3/4" bar I won't fit anyway.

My Ultrashield seat is bolted to the floor through 1-1/4" x 1/4" tube steel mounts plus shims for the correct back angle, while the seat itself sits about 3 inches from the rear mono body indent (rear lower seat pad rear). I 've got a clear one-inch from the top roll cage hoop to my helmet. It took hours of banging out the lower mono body pan to accommodate the mounts and eventually the seat. It's pretty comfortable but people are always amazed when I climb out of the car, which I can do totally strapped in, in 8 seconds, via NASA race rules.

My seat is like that as well, just not quite as far back. It sits literally on the floor the way it's mounted and with a helmet on I'm maybe an inch from the roof!!

Very understandable Greg, though gas has dropped a little recently it's still killer, and I know you have that V10 ram!!! That's an insane amount of money for one week!!!

Well if you drive through Iowa you'll see the lowest prices in the country. $2.74 for 92 octane and $2.55 for 87 last night!!! But it's still rediculous. I'm just shy of 30 years old and I remember paying $.99 when I was 16. You old farts probably remember paying a 1/3 of that.

Here are some pics finally....first one is hilarious. I take my buddies girlfriend for a ride, thus was her first time at autocross...
