It depends on the hood. Some hoods are just "vented" for aesthetic reasons. If you were to have a professionally molded hood scoop installed (like in some of those rally cars), however, then I do believe it may reasonbly lower underhood temps (at least while moving). In the mean time, you might do what Brian suggested in another thread: remove the weather stripping at the back (toward the hinges) of the hood. While driving, this creates almost a suction effect, which pulls hot air out of the engine bay. He lives in AZ too, so I would think he knows a thing or two about high temperatures...

What are your thoughts as far as vented hoods? Are they an overrated cooling mod?

A reverse vented hood would lower air temps especially if you had a grille for instance that draws air inside the engine bay (ex: evo VIII).

You see the air moving over the hood creates a lower pressure area than the air in your engine bay. Moving air always creates a lower pressure area, and pressure drops the faster air is moving... It's what makes planes fly by forcing air to move quicker on the top side of the wing than underneath.

Air is forced into the engine bay by the grille and bumper openings, since air directly in front of them has nowhere else to go.

Air is pulled OUT of the engine bay by the lower pressure over the hood making the higher pressure air in the engine bay come out of the openings. (this works on rear-facing openings and vents, front-facing openings are working the same as your grille and bumper openings... FORCING air into the engine bay)

If a hood vent is improperly designed, it can cause both push and pull at the same time, with reduced effects on either or even negative effects.

exhaust wrap the turbo and downpipe. I live in vegas too and had the same problem. I also found that the down pipe was right agaist the return coolant hose to the block.

If theres a lot mositure where you live, I wouldn't seggest you wrap anything, as it can cause your piping to rust and even crack.

No moisture here, this is Vegas!

you could try adding an oil cooler...they're pretty cheap and work good. You could also get that 97-99 eclipse front bumper on your wishlist, . It looks like it would channel air better to your IC, condensor, and radiator.BTW I like that weatherstripping trick velocitaPaola, I'm gonna have to do that when I get home!
hope this helps-jason p

you could try this alsoROFL
