I cant seem to locate the problem... I wonder if anyone have had the same experience.
My '91 motor after boosting 10psi MAX and accelerating, the temperature climbs and remains for a while almost at maximun. Once it climbs, it stays there as long as the engine is running. I basically have to turn it off and leave the fan on and then after 2-3 minutes it goes back to normal temp.
I already did a compression test, I m getting 140-145 in all cylinders. There is no coolant in my oil or viceversa. Replaced the thermostat. Removed the thermostat. Replaced the water cap. Replaced the coolant with 70/30 mix. Flush the coolant. I m really losing my mind. The amazing thing is that I could leave the car running without boosting or racing it or drive around normally and it wont heat up.
I have a slightly big FMIC but I have been told that it shouldnt be that.

Any ideas?

Read that.

If you want a custom answer give us some custom details.

Are your fans running, do you have a thermostat in, when you turn the heat on does the temp go down, etc?

I would think your problem is the temp sensor is bad ! Are you sure your car is getting hot? Also how much coolant did you put in . Did your car start to get hot after the big intercooler was installed? If so your not getting enough air flow.

Ok basically you're ruining your engine by running it that hot and I'd be absolutely surprised if you haven't already blown a headgasket.

If you're running 70% water try going to a 50/50 mix.

Check:

coolant level
T-stat
fan
overflow bottle/cap/hose
rad. cap
condition of radiator
waterpump
coolant leaks

Note: When engine is turned off the fan does not cool anything. The reason the temps drop is because the engine is off thus not creating any heat and it gradually cools down.

In the future shut down engine ASAP when the red dummy light comes on for either overheating or low oil and read up on why coolant + oil is so fundamentally important to an engine.

Make sure there is no air in the system. Check the radiator, if the fins are turning white you are in need of a new radiator. Also DONT keep driving the car if the temp guage goes up, and stays up for a while...the stock guage has a very broad range of what you say normal temp. the guage will not move out of dead center unless the temp is lower then 180* or higher then 230*. This is what I would do, put an oil catch pan under your car...about 6"s away(towards the read of the car), then unscrew the "butterfly" plastic screw all the way , then open the radiator cap (this gets the fluid out quick, and that is why you want the catch pan positioned a little farther back towards the rear of the car), then take a hose, and keep spraying it in the radiator (screw still unscrewed), spray water inside where the radiator cap is (if it is cloged this will help, make sure the upper radiator hose is not attached to the radiator, because you dont want to wash anything into the radiator), then screw the screw back in, put one bottle of wetter in(or 2), then fill the rest of the system with a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze, and water, make sure the over flow bottle is filled as well. Then to make sure no air pockets are in the system you will have to burp it...take the radiator cap off, and start the car up and let it idle, if an air pocket comes out fill the hose back to the top with coolant, then put the radiator cap back on, and take it for a drive, if it still over heats try "burping" the system again. Also get a new OEM T-stat (not one of those crappy Auto Zone ones), and drill 2-3 holes in the outer ring of the T-stat, they should be 1/16"-1/8", this will allow constant flow of coolant without the T-stat opening.

mine was driving me nuts it was the rad. cap
Yes, I have had this problem as well. To the OP you will want to check the gasket on the radiator cap for cracks, dry rot, ect...
By the way ddavisaf that article is very helpful, great job.

Get a real water temp gauge and then update this thread if it is in fact overheating.
