What are the benefits of having overdrive activated?

Does is make your car go any quicker when you have it activated?

I don't know much about it and was wondering what you guys thought.

Overdrive is basically just a cruising gear... you get better gas mileage with it on at highway speeds.

Overdrive is just a gas-saving economy gear basically. Gears like 1 and 2 are for power but at a less efficient fuel economy.
