I have a 2g gst and today sitting in the tim hortons drive through when I noticed it started to over heat. It never got to the H mark but when I was done at the drive through and decided to find a good place to park it, as I drove away the temp gauge went down. as long as i was driving it would stay cool. It was low on coolent, no coolent in the oil, no oil in coolent, just replaced thermostat and cant find any coolent leaks any ideas?

If your temps drop when driving, that says your coolant is flowing. It just needs air moving to cool it. Check your fan.

Fan was running could hear it running, I topped up coolent hasn't done it since so I was wondering where the coolent could go. also wondering if my turbo is water cooled or oil cooled. Thanx

probably had an air bubble in the system. You should be fine now. Just keep an eye on it.

(a hole in the thermostat helps with bleeding the system)

Some cars have problems colling when sitting still. If they start to cool down just by pushing the gas while sitting still then a small hole in the thermostat will help cool it when at idle.

Also if you have a fmic that can cause overheating issues too, but i didnt see that in your profile, just a suggestion. You could also wire your a/c fan to come on with your main engine fan, or wire it to a toggle switch and that could help too. Or if your a/c was on that could be the fan you were hearing, and the main fan wasnt on. I would check the fan fuse just to be sure.

I a/c fan was not on I had that problem in my truck, the first thing I do is turn the a/c or heat off. thanks tho

Have alot of people done this small hole thing. How small of a hole? and do I need to take the thermostat out again?

You could track the lines down to the oil cooler/filter housing and check for leaks there, and also where it connects to the water pipe behind the manifold, if there are no leaks in those places you arent leaking coolant through your turbosystem.

I have done it on quite a few cars. I forget what size drill bit I used though. If you do this I would take the thermostat out so you don't get the shavings in your coolant.

Heres another question for you. Would this be bad for cold weather since I live in canada?

Thanks I will check that when I have more time.

check your water pump sometimes when they get weak they dont push enough at idle to keep it cool even if it s not leaking. Most of them u can spinn by hand if it spins with no pressure at all then they are starting to get weak.It can also spin with pressure but have a weak spot part of the way around.Hope this helps
