should their be some play in the timing belt?

OH OK I REMEMBER,,, is ## oil temp gauge supposed to be super low??? or is mine not working properly,, never seen it move past L

1. Yes, there should be a small amount of play in your timing belt. It will not be so taught that it cannot move. How much play you constitute "a little" though? There's a deflection number in the factory service manual which will say if it's in spec or not if you'd like that. But I usually go by the belt between the top of the cam gears. If I can push it down a bit (less than .5") and rotate it about 45* I consider that tight enough.

2. You might want to check the electrical connection for your pressure sender as the wire might not be on the sender if the gauge doesn't move.

Perfect. Also the play in teh belt between the cam gears will vary depending on where the engine is sitting. If its caught on a non comopression stroke or in between it may seem like theres a lot of play, if you simply turn it over a fraction of a rotation it will tighten right back up.

There should be a little deflection though. A too tight timing belt will help promote oil pump failure, or at best more rapid wear. Its really hard to relay it via forum or even over the phone for that matter. Just kind of something us guys that have been doing it for a while can "tell" by feel.
