this is some funny stuff. so i had a little oil leak and it was comming from the stock oil pressure sender unit(dummy light). i took it off and used a ton of teflon tape on the threads and put it back in. and it still leaked. the oil was actually comming out from the pig tail and leaking. so the oil was leaking through the sending unit. has this happened to anyone else?

also i searched and found that at idle 11psi of oil pressure is normal. mine is about 15 and when i hit the gas it gets up to about 50 or so. is that right? curious to see what you guys are getting for pressure.

lastly while i was doing this oil thing i figured i would change my oil. i see all the srt4 guys around here using 5w-30. so since we almost have the same motor i thought i would try some. will it work ok?

p.s.s.s.s my wideband and safc 2 should come in this week :thumb:

That's what I see.

Common failure mode. Cough up the $7 for a new one. Don't over-tighten, you can split the housing. I prefer to use sealants made for automobiles (Permatex) rather than toilet tape.

How bout you just don't use it at all ;)

Put a tee on the back of the block in it's place...oil pressure gauge on one side and oil feed line on the other :thumb:

That's how mine is...no problems at all.

This is actually a good idea if you're using an aftermarket gauge. All the stock sending unit does is activate the dummy light. If you have a turbo kit installed and still need a dummy light, I would be very afraid for your engine.

Aside from the actual sending unit for, say, an Autometer oil pres. guage, everything you need is available at Home Depot.

For the pressure sender, or for the light sender?
They are one and the same on a 420A, sir. If I had to pick one or the other, I'd say the light.

Guys, the stock Oil Pressure sensor isn't a sensor at all. Its a switch. When oil pressure is there, there is no light. When oil pressure is gone it turns the light on. I just pulled mine... and I didn't even get the oil light on the dash. I was thinking I was going to need a resistor, but I didn't.

hey guys I just broke the damn sensor for the second time trying to tighten it down. Im going to install a mech. oil pressure gauge in its place, but in the mean time until I get one is it OK to drive it?? I assume it is since it's a sealed unit. Let me know thanks!

EDIT: this is for a 95 GS with the really "long" plastic piece of crap sender.

wholly resurrected thread batman :sneaky: you should be fine with that. however, i would recommend and electric gauge. don't want 180 degree oil in your lap. :notgood:

its only been a month :p

Electrical gauge = expensive
this is on a non-turbo
A buddy of mine with an 11 sec car runs a mech. gauge, altho he is using a copper line... :p
I have a mech. gauge and its free :)

Maybe I'll find something to put it in just incase it gets a leak...

I have the cheapest Autometer electric oil pressure gauge they offer on Summit's website. It was under $70 shipped. I wouldn't install a mechanical under any circumstances. Even so, why bother with the gauge if the engine is stock? Sometimes, I wonder why I even bothered installing the thing. Unless you like to watch the pressure drop below 25psi when making hard right-handers under load, they're pretty pointless. :shrug

Well mainly because this is my girlfriends car, and without the oil pressure sending unit she would have no warning if she lost oil pressure. Atleast with a gauge she would have some warning. The engine isn't pushing any boost but it is built for it (forged pistons & eagle rods). I've installed under-hood mech. oil pressure gauges before and never noticed them leaking or anything. I don't understand why their is so much fear surrounding it.

ever see a radiator hose leak? now think about hot oil going through a tube half as strong as a radiator hose into the cabin of your girls car. unless you use braided hose eventually it will leak. and if you use braided hose the gauge will be more expensive then a electric. i got my carbon fiber autometer electric off ebay for like 60 bucks. it rocks.

thanks for the info -- yet i have never seen one of the nylon hoses that comes with the oil pres gauges leak. I forgot to check ebay i'll look there :)

A radiator hose is two inches. Oil pressure sensing lines run about 1/16" or less, and when they leak will drip. It can make a small mess, but not really much of a hazard. They don't gush hot oil over the back side of the gauge pod like a firehose.

Thanks for the info defiant. I think i will temporarily install the mech gauge until I can get a cheap electrical one :) Do you think its worth it to wrap the nylon hose in some vacuum hose?

if your gonna use it, why don't you just mount the gauge in the egnine bay and be safe about it. I think you keep asking people on what you should do to install it, but I think everyone is trying to get the point accross that you shouldn't put it inside your car.

What good is an oil pressure gauge under the hood of a womans car? ROFL Seriously. I didnt ask what I should do to install it --im going to. There have been people that posted its unsafe, like a radiator leak style, and defiant mentioned it oozes out rather then shooting wildly all over the place.

The 2000's been happy with the factory oil-into-the-dashboard sensing line for the twenty years I've owned it.
It'll be fine. You'll get plenty of drama from other places.

neons sending unit well work if you buy an adapter bolt. this is on 95's though. 96's and up have different plugin's
