oil pressure gauge problem

my oil pressure gauge in my 1990 eclipse gsx goes on and off. not sure if it's blocked oil passages, low oil pressure, or bad sending unit. any ideas? sometimes the gauge goes on for a little but than goes low again. on meaning past half way. i checked the oil filter location. is that where the oil pump is? you don't need to take the timing belt off to get to the oil pump? there's this big round gold/brass looking thingy right by the oil filter. what is that? any help is appreciated. thanks

check connections to the sending unit, it sits under and a little back furthur than the oil filter, their should be 2 wire to it i believe green and blue, (im thinking the round gold brass thingy you refered to is acually the sending unit) my gauge used to do that 2 but figured out it was just a lose connection, from dirt and crap, and yes you have to take off the timing belt to get to the oil pump if ya need one i have a brand new one still in the box its a TOGA H/v Oil pump p/m me if ya need more help their a couple things to do to check if your acually not getting correct oil pressure

Is the gauge the stock unit in the gauge bezel, or is it an aftermarket gauge?
The stock gauge on Turbo DSM's doesnt read anything very good. Its just a generalization as to what things are doing, and doesnt relive any information.

Check the wires to the sending units. They tend to get brittle with age.

if its the stock gauge, it probably died...they are about as helpful as the stock boost gauge anyway...
