Oil light on but pressure guage shows ok???

What would cause the oil light to come on my 91 GSX but the oil pressure guage shows good oil pressure? I've got a new motor with 6K mi on it with zero problems. The oil light just came on tonite when i got near an idle. Does'nt go off til over 2K. The oil pressure guage shows above the "low" mark at idle and goes to just below the "high" mark when off idle.

Well, Did you check the oil level?

Yessir, that was the first thing i checked. I changed the oil and filter and still had the problem. The oil light comes on but the pressure guage shows good oil pressure(factory guage). I noticed that the oil pressure switch that feeds the light was leaking a little oil as well. I pulled it out and put in a fitting so i could run a Sunpro mech. oil pressure guage. I have 25psi at 1200rpm idle when fully warm and 55psi at 2400rpm. 3100rpm puts it at 75psi and if i go over 4500 it pegs the guage at 100psi. Must be the oil pressure switch. I left the guage in and just got back from a 200mi round trip with no problems what so ever. Just freaks you out when all of the sudden an oil light comes on that has never been on before!

Been there before. It's even worse on a galant since they don't have a gauge, just a dummy light. Read: get a real gauge
