Oil leak on transmission

My transmission is leaking a few drop of oil. As far as I can tell, it's coming from where the 2d and last section of the transmission bolts together. I've never taken a transmission apart. My question is if I remove the VC and the two outside gears, can new new sealant be applied to the mating surfaces or does the entire transmission have to be dissasembled. What I'm hoping is after pulling the gears, the other casings pull off leaving the gears in place. This is on the 5sp AWD.
