Oil Leak On Oil Cover [Merged 9-7] cap gasket dipstick leaking pool

Well, the issue is that you want to let the air into the PCV and valve cover breather, and not have oil coming back out as it saturates everything. This puts oil into the intake track (bad).

You want to keep boost from entering through the PCV valve. The PCV is connected to the intake manifold which is pressurized under boost; the pressure pushes through the PCV valve. It causes positive pressure underneath the piston, making it harder on the downstroke. You cause your dipstick to pop up. The valve prevents boost in the crankcase, it allows for the engine to put the crankcase under vacuum while cruising (good) as it helps keep the ring sealed and minimize blow-by. When you go into boost, the vacuum is maintained since the valve holds the pressure.

OK, good, that explanation makes sense. My dipstick does NOT pop out, but while under boost especially on "higher" boost, my car will start to smoke. I have the profec2 and if I have it under low boost, it doesnt smoke, but once I put into HI boost and gun it, it starts smoking.
I think that might be the problem, blow-by b/c of too much pressure.
Thanks, I'm going to order it soon and let u guys know what happens.

ok ive never had any valve cover gasket leak problems til now..i just changed my oil with redline 5w30 and added a quart of lucas synthetic oil stabilzer..now it leaks oil from the back left of the valve cover by the gasket.i think the problem may lie in the fact that i forgot to add one less quart with the lucas and being that its already thin and now overfilled could this be the problem.any input would be good before i drain a quart or two.thanks

well how much over is it on the dipstick, that sucks that your gonna have to drain some.

So if your supposed to have 4.5 qurats in there, how much did you put in?

it might not be a bad idea to replace the gasket anyways if you havent' done it for a while. 15 bucks for the set wouldn't kill ya to do it, and might save you the cash that you'd be draing out. (redline is expensive).

Good luck.

yeah i actually did just replace the gasket.i used 5 quarts plus the lucas making it a total of 6..i just really need to figure out if this could be the problem first.### i dont have a problem just draining a quart or so and saving it or throwing it out.i just want the thing to stop leaking.thanks

You need to drain the oil until the level on the dipstick reads correctly. Too much oil can cause more serious problems than a leak from the valve cover. Your turbo and associated oil lines do add capacity to the system, but it is minimal, at best.

Break the drain plug loose so that it leaks into your catch can and pause every so often to check the level.

If you installed a new gasket and it's leaking right away, you messed something up.

Hi everybody, I have a 90 gst and I cant find out the reason why oil keeps filling up in my spark plug valley, comes out through the little weephole that drains fluid from the valvecover(front of cover near header and P/S pump). I thought that the oil cap was bad; cause it was wet around there. so I replaced it. Problem still persists. Then I thought the PCV valve may not be working right and allowing pressure to return back into the engine. So I replaced it. Problem still persists. All the vent lines are hooked up properly so I dont see why there would be excess pressure build up that would cause oil to push though the cap and into the valley. I just cant figure it out. It sux because whenever I do a little "spirited" driving. Oil comes out and drips on the manifold. Sending a cloud of smoke out of my engine bay. Not very cool, IMO. So as of right now I have a rag that soaks up any oil that fills up the valley so oil doesnt come in contact with the manifold. I replace the rag every week or so and everytime it is nearly dripping. Id really like to know if anyone has ever had this problem. Or has any idea what it could be.

Oh yeah, the car runs great, very strong. Boosts up as it should. But thats when the oil comes out the most, under boost conditions. Its been like that ever since I bought it from a local mechanic 6 months ago.

Is it a stock valve cover. I got a hyndai valve cover the one that has the smooth top. Anyways when I put it on I had the same problem. They use different size seals and instead of bolts they use studs. Also did you take the valve cover off and check the inner seals?

Ok so this is bugging the heck out of me i've bee tring to figure out where the oil that all over my valve cover coming from.

I bought a new dipstick tube and dipstick but that did't fix the problem i just cant figure out where all the oilis cominf from does anybody have an idea on where all the oil comes from

Sounds like you need a new oil cap. ;) When they get old the seal usually weakens or cranks and will leak oil down into you valve cover valley. :thumb:

What i did was i bought cork asket material and made my own gasket and loving it. I had a cracked valve cover once right after i went on a hard drive it would be almost filled but i never knew this cause after an hour it would seep back into the crack

Im having the same problem with a hyundai valve cover. Its the stock shaved one off the elentra with the 4g63 motor. I was told because I dont have the original studs, rubber washers and nuts that it will leak. I tried using just some longer bolts and washer but it still leaks. I still have not used a hyundai seal since I thought they where the same but it seems not to fit completly perfect. For the original hardware form dealer it was going to be $187 for 16 studs, washers, and nut caps. Pissing me off since I cant find any hyundai's at junk yards here that year.

Originally they are not mounted with studs, so why would it leak with just bolts? I just picked up new stainless bolts for mine at lowes for a couple dollars. Also the only rubber washers I can think of are the ones used to mount the plug wire cover on to the valve cover. And those aren't needed at all. I don't even have my plug wire cover on. My bet is that your valve cover is cracked too. When mine cracked it was a hairline crack that I couldn't even see until i removed my cover.

It couldn't be any of the valve cover gasket ? My friend replaced his oil cap and it didn't work and there aren't any visible cracks.

This is a freshly powder coated valve cover and there are no visible cracks at all. Originally the studs had little washers on them not the wire cover. If you look the studs are larger so they would seal better. I cant figure it out, i may try to make my own custom seal.

Valve cover gasket, put thread tape on the bolts to prevent anything and pull your plug wires, if each one or any one of them have a little oil around them or are puddling I would pull the cover and check teh gasket. Also let it run and watch it and see if anything happens.

I had the same problem. THe oil was leaking out of my valve cover bolts. Use some thread tite and RTV around the threads of the bolts. It worked for me! Hope it works for you!:thumb:

ok man i had the same problem all you need to do is go to the local hardware store, take your oil cap off your car while your there, go to the o rings and take off the old crusty hard o ring that is on the original. It might be a little tough. Get one that fits but is pretty fat roundwise. That is the oil cap. My friends 92 tsi did that and i helped him with that. Now i had gotten mad oil build up in the spark plug holes. all you have to do is get 2 washers(it is kinda hard to find the right one because you don't want to scratch the powder coat when tighting so don't rush into buying one, get the washer that fits exactly.). tighten the 2 bolts that are in the middle holes with the washers pretty tight. I was scared when i was tightening them because i didn't want the strip or break anything. the only problem with the washers is that i destryed those little rubber bushing things. o well next time you do something get a valve cover with new ones.the washers cover them up anyways. i think that should solve all problem. no need to mess with outside bolts unless you get leaking with them. i will post a pic to show you mine i have a 420a vc with baby blue paint and i had the same problem. if anymore problem just p/m me and i can try to help

sorry i can't post a pic camera not working right

This has become annoying... I've replaced 1 valve cover once, after painting it all nice, i followed manual torque specs to bolt down the valve cover and cracked it. So i got a new one. This one i made sure, but i'm still getting oil inside the valve cover spark plug bay area.... I replaced my PCV w/ a new one, thinking this would fix my problem, only now my dipstick shoots out spraying oil all over the hood...... and I still get oil in the valve cover bay.
Is this my turbo? I can't seem to pressurize it with a boost leak tester at the turbo inlet, are these the symptoms of turbo seals gone bad?
It's a stock T-25 with 77k miles on it.
