Oil Leak On Oil Cover [Merged 9-7] cap gasket dipstick leaking pool

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

You can also go to advanced or autozone and buy a whole gasket kit for like $100. And the kit includes every gasket you will need. Im sure they would be alot cheaper than going to a dealership.

valve cover seal
half moon seal
4 sparkplug well seals, and some gray rtv.....
Get a service manual too while you're at, a Haynes should suffice, you'll need to know your torque specs....
The valve cover is cast al, so over tightening the valve cover will crack it, so you don't want to do that.
Might as well change your plugs, NGK BPR6ES, gap them to .028", unless it's different for a 1g...

Well done on your score, and happy boostin...

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help! Looks like I am going to be ordering it online. So is a Haynes manual my best bet or is there a better/more informative manual out there?

The FSM (Factory service manual) is best... it is availible on CD on Ebay for like $4 bucks.

Not sure about that crap, but here is a link to a well known shop here on Tunerz.....
This has all of the parts that I mentioned....

I just barely priced the spark plug seals at the Mitsu dealer and they were almost exactly five bucks a piece if that helps. 5x4=20. I'm having that same problem. Now, this might seem like a dumb question, but does anybody know of a good performance oil cap? Such a silly thing when you think about it... however, mine only had 300 miles and it's already leaking. Grrr.

I've created some links to some parts that you guys will need to do a valve cover seal replacement.
I also posted a link to an OEM EVO VIII Oil Cap in post #6....
I've had one for nearly 30k and not a problem!

So it get's flippin' hot under my hood. I understand this. Enough to warp my valve cover? Apparently so. For a while there I had oil everywhere. It was coming from the oil cap and after trying 3 different caps to no avail, I realized somethin was wrong. One shop told me I was screwed and it would cost $5000 for a new motor. Another shop told me $1200 and they could FIND out the problem. Taking matters into my own hands I bought a used NA 89 Laser valve cover and that appears to have solved the problem... 200 miles later... no oil leak whatsoever. I thought I'd post in case anybody else ever had this problem.

Thats funny. A ''shop'' wanted $5,000 to give you a motor because you needed a new valve cover... The other shop wanted $1,200 because they could find the problem of a $10.00 fix.. I hope you don't ever come in contact with them again

When my water pump failed, the engine was hot enough to stretch the valve cover screws.

When I pulled over I thought I had a catastrophic failure, turns out the only thing I was legitimately leaking was coolant. New valve cover gasket, new coolant hoses and a new water pump.

It is aluminum, it won't take as much abuse as steel would. Just make sure your cover bolts have the correct tension (I hadn't checked mine in quite a long time) and you should be okay.

Glad to hear you solved your problem on your own, kudos for that! The life of a DSMer LOL!

have another problem with my talon. i was lookin for a boost leak and have come to find there is oil in the recess in my valve cover where the spark plugs are. i have no idea where the oil could be coming from. i was told my oil cap could be leaking(I had an aftermarket rallisport cap) so i installed the stock one. its still leaking are these known to leak from the cap? if not where else could my leak be coming from? :talon:

I have the same problem, check the valve cover for cracks. Mine ended up being cracked in two different spots. The torque specs on those are VERY small, so if you over tightened them even a little bit, it probably cracked.

If that isn't it, check the PCV (valve at the back left of the valve cover) and make sure that isnt leaking.

Valve covers are reasonable, I know of two people on here selling theirs for about 45-50 shipped.

You're likely leaking from the spark plug tube seals under boost which is somewhat common. Install a new VC gasket and new tube seals and you'll be good to go. FYI, when you buy the gasket, the tube seals will be included as part of a kit.

Hope that helps,

Andy

i would first check the oil cap, then looks for cracks in the valve cover. if you have an extra valve cover laying around, see if you can pop that one on there..

You may want to take it to a local shop if your not to comfortable diagnosing the problem yourself just to be on the safe side. hope that this helps :thumb:

im getting a noticable amount of oil inside my valve cover around the spark plug holes. I took off the intake tube (stock) from the breather and there was oil in there, whats going on?
