Ok, I just had my timing belt and crank seal, and other gaskets on that side repalced at a friends shop. It was leaking oil, and now a day later its leaking again. What is wrong with the car? Motor has liek a 1000 miles on it. Do you think it is crank walk causing the crank seal to leak? PLease help me, im so frustrated with cars in general right now

Tell us in more detail where it's leaking. I bet I know where though, I bet it's leaking at the bolt, that bolts on the gear or sprocket that the balance shaft belt rides on mine leaked there. If thats it it's to big or to little (length wise) Give us more info where it's leaking, top cover or bottom if the above is not it. Also if there is any oil on the belt I would get a new one, oil stretches the belt. If it's stretched it can make the belt skip a tooth or more an than you bend valves and all us dsmr's know that really :notgood: . If it seems dry then reuse it, but for piece of mind if you think it got wet the replace it.

Well thats the thing, I just bought this car about a month ago. The motor was just rebuilt, because the timing belt jumped and a lot of valves were bent and needed new pistons. So when I bought the car, I noticed a little oil leak, but nothing major. It turned out the leak was coming from behind the timing cover. So I brought it to a friends shop. I am new to dsm's, been in the vw scene so long, and never worked on a dsm, so I didnt feel like messing up the job. So, I got him to do the timing belt and fix the oil leak. He said it was the crank seal that was leaking, and said that it looked like it was installed improperly and looked crooked. So he repalced that, along with many other gaskets. Now a day later, im having the same issues with oil leaking from the same spot. I dont know exactly if its leakign again, from the crank seal, because I haven't taken off the lower timing cover yet. But it looks just like it did before. So, does this sound like a case of crank walk, where the crank seal is being walked out, causing it to leak oil or what? do i need a new block in this case, or can i just rebuild this same block with new rod bearings etc. If I do decide to rebuild this block, im going with aftermarket pistons/rods etc.

Does the car have balance shaft's? If no does the Bolt hole on the front case for the BS have a bolt in it because oil will leak out of that hole.

yes, still has the balance shafts. and the balance shaft belt was just repalced when the timing belt was done

This is what i said, but did they use thread sealer??

ok, i talked with my friend who did the timing belt, and he said it might be excessive crank case pressure. So, im going to have to do a catch can, weld some fittings on my valve cover, etc.

As far as putting a catch can on, would the catch can from Road Race Engineering solve it, or should I weld 2 fittings on my valve cover, get rid of the pcv valve, and run the two fittings to a catch can.

dont know if they used thread sealer, but like i said, i was told to check the pcv valve and do a catch can

Ok here is my theory. Mods or wise men feel free to add if this is no where near the problem. I don't know how a catch can will help with too high of pressure in the crank case. That seems like a patch to cover up the real problem. I would do a leak down test and see if the rings are bad, even a compression will get you some where. You see I think the extra pressure is blowing the seal out. It's not supposed to do that and you should figure out why it is. Also not sure what your oil pressure is, but it could be too high and causing the same thing. See if the oil pump is flowing right, there is a ball or some device that limits how much oil it pumps if that fails the above can happen. Not sure how common it is on DSM's but you never know. That is what I think you should do next, but if you want to just cover up the probelm go for it, but later on I will almost guarantee you will be posting about how unreliable your dsm is. :D

Yeah, i understand, as I don't want to just cover up the problem. I'd like to resolve it. We did a compression test, it was 150 in all 4 cyl. so thats good. But we also thought that maybe the pcv valve is bad or clogged causing not enough pressure to be released from the valve cover causing that seal to blow out.

I'm having the same exact issue with my BRAND NEW engine. it has 0 miles still and after 15 minutes of running i have oil on the timing belt. all the gaskets are torqued to specs and i have new seals except for cam seals and the balance shaft seal i guess(i have an extra seal thats smaller than the cam seals that i haven't used so far). I re-used my oil pump ### it was practicly new anyway but i had a noticable amount of oil on my timing belt, any ideas or just the usual "take it apart and check everything?"

I've had major issues with the cam seals in the past. Cam seals can easily be put in crooked. Take the top timing cover off and see if oil is present on the cam gears or right behind them. If there is, then its most likely cam seals.
