I'm doing my required oil change and I'm having a very tough time getting my filter off. I do believe the previous owner didnt change it, due to it's condition and how tight it is from the pressure build up.

The filter is a fram grip. I've tried bare hand no luck with a rag same thing also tried a snap on oil filter Pilers, and same results no luck either. The pilers is only squeezing the filter and it still won't break loose.

This is the first time this happend, it was never this tough.

I don't a oil filter band wrench, is there another way to remove it. note: I sprayed it with wd40 still no luck.

I need help asap, my 2g is on jack stands and its my only DD.

It will make a mess but puncture it with a long flat head screwdriver and use it for leverage. Works everytime!

Buy or borrow a band wrench before you tear it up. Put the band wrench right at the base of the filter and it will come right off.

P.S. The filter being tight has nothing to do with the pressure "building up". It is just really hard to get one off that has been overtightened AND not changed in a long time.

Good luck:thumb:

The flathead screw driver and hammer worked. Thanks guys. :thumb:
I'll have put that band wrench on my tool list.

My burnt oil problem is fixed and next is my atx. Last will be oil pan gasket replacement, its not leaking jut wondering if there's stuff in it.

Your 1g looks sinister Gravedigger.

please add oil to the O-ring of the oil filter gasket and you will not have this problem. see it time and time again where companies like valvoline do not apply oil to the oil filter gasket and they pretty much meld together in a sense. hope this helps :)

ive done this sooo many times, but it works. just be sure to puncture it towards the bottom just so you dont hit anything important. ive had to use this method every time ive changed the oil on both my cars and my wifes car. then i just got sick of it and started ordering the k&n oil filters with the nut welded on the end.. perfect.

I always add oil, to the o ring. The previous didn't do that, there was burr on edge filter housing. Thankfully when I installed the new oe mopar filter it didn't leak :hellyeah: :rocks:

make sure it wasn't double gasketed too. that happened to me on my old ESi and i spilled $35 of royal purple all over my garage floor

Yeah really... That's the kind of simple stuff that can ruin your day.:| Glad to hear you got it taken care of.:)

Don't over tighten it....most people do. Buy the Purolator Gold filter. Best filter next to Amsoil or K&N and half the price.

Band Wrenchs suck bawls.

The pliers he is using work much better. If it has been over tightend and no oil was put on the seal, and its been on there a much longer mileage/time than it should have been then :

Spray some PB Blaster around the bottom end of the filter. Let it set in for a while.

Then try and loosen it.

Or

JB Weld a Nut to it and use a socket to get it off.

OR

Jam a Flat blade scewdriver through roughly the middle and make sure it is long enough to penetrate both sides. Do this in such a way you can push on one end while pulling on the other or you could risk just ripping the thing sheet metal the filer is made of.

Make sure with any of these methods a generous amount of PB Blaster is Used.

This just happened to me yesterday. Put the new filter on filled with oil went to start the car to cycle oil into the filter. Next thing I know I'm listening to something that sounds like my car has the shits, get out and oil was slung all over my driveway haha. It was a good thing I bought extra oil.

Not sure about the 420a, but be careful when tightening the oil filter on an internally cooled oil housing. You can cause damage to the fins on the comb by crushing it. Check out vfaq for a complete write up.

Filter should go snug and a quarter turn. Never had a problem using purolator or OEM filters sticking using this method.
