Hey forum, Just a few questions about the oil filter housings.
I have a 96 M/T GST 7bolt 4g63 the oil filter housing started leaking at the sending unit.
It was cracked, so all i need to know is what will work to replace it.
Will one from a 7bolt 420 A or a 6bolt 4g63 Work?
Hope this is not a dumb question but i cant find the info i need.
Trying to go to the yard in the morning to get this, just need to know what car I can rob it off.

A late 1992-1994 non-turbo housing will technically work, but you won't be able to keep your water cooled system if you use it without some sort of adaptive unit. Same goes with 2G non-turbo Spyder housings. No 1995-1999 420A housing will work.
 
To running without an oil cooler? None really. They are recommended, not required so long as you allow proper cool down for your car/turbo before shutting it off. If you decided to go that route, you'd need to make sure you loop the line that feeds the cooler to that for the return.

To the best of my knowledge, no, it won't.

The generally accepted idea is if you're not going to road race or autocross you don't need an oil cooler.
My thought is why wouldn't I want one anyway?!
 
It looks like all the 1G 4G63s had the same oil filter housing and oil cooler (according to ASA), so it should drop right on.
 
Non-turbo cars didn't come with the oil cooler from the factory. If you pulled that from a true non-turbo vehicle, it had been swapped on along with the oil filter housing.

The non-turbo oil filter housings have a built-in, threaded boss for the filter to screw on to, as does the 1990 turbo housing; put another way, it is part of the casting. The later model turbo housings have a threaded hole for the oil cooler bolt to thread into while going through and holding the oil cooler in place.

I agree that all DSMs with a water-cooled oil cooler used the same water cooler. I do not agree that they all used the same housing (6-bolt vs. 7-bolt). All the same, if you pulled one from a true 7-bolt engine and it is in fact a turbo housing with oil cooler, it will work just fine.

I'm just reading off what ASA says, it could be right, it could be wrong, I've never owned a 1G N/T.

Interesting, your ASA-fu must be stronger than mine. Disregard my post then.
 
To run an air cooler you will need an evo3 ofh I just put one on my spyder.

That is an option, and IMO a great way to do it, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

Indeed, there are also sandwich adapters (you'll need an external thermostat usually) and the Evo 8/9 OFH works as well. The Evo 8/9 has the benefit of being down-facing. The Evo 3 oriented the same was as stock. If you use a sandwich adapter you may run in to exhaust clearance issues though.
