Hey guys im in the process of rebuilding my 6bolt and i read somewhere here on the forums that a couple memebers have removed the stock 91-94 oil cooler to help elimenat the chances of the filter backing out and oil going all over the place and it also free's up a couple inches in the engine bay. Witch in fact this has happened to me 3 times already and dont want deal with the problem.

so i guess my question is "is it ok to bypass the oil cooler and just thread the oil filter straight into the oil filter housing"??

This is gonna be a track car only not a daily driver.

Sorry im talkin about water oil cooler heres a pic and the part im talking about that i would like to bypass.

Don't quote me on this, but isn't your oil filter backing off have to do with your balance shafts? I know when balance shafts are installed 180 degrees the wrong way, this can cause your filter to back out. I would say that you shouldn't have to remove it to solve your problems. If in fact you are using it as a track car only, people eliminate the need for coolant. So in I am guessing that those people are either running air coolers or not having coolant running to their oil coolers, which would eliminate the need for the cooler. Just need a filter at that point.

Personally I would just pull off the 91-94 oil filter housing...

Buy a 90 oil filter housing and a fair sized oil cooler, buy a 90 turbo water pipe.voila good to go...more room for filter, oil is cooler, less coolant lines, less chance for leakage, don't have to worry bout oil filter backing out, dont have to worry bout crushing the fins that do seperate the oil/coolant mixture in the 91-94 housing....

I think for a few more dollars you can have a much cleaner setup...BTW its much more simple to do it now before its in the car...Mod once, not twice...

Or take out the threaded rod that the oil filter screws on to and liberally apply threadlocker. Torque it down properly. Then safety wire your oil filter. If you have a problem then, I'd be surprised.

Also, that looks like you have an ## crank pulley. I would HIGHLY recommend getting rid of this since it has no dampening ability. Since this is a track car, I'd get an Fluidampr or ATI.
