Ohhh Shizzz.... My turbo is F'd and guess why?!?!?!

Interesting enough is that I doubt the new oil caused your turbo failure. I have used that new oil on my 97 eclipse. I use the mobil 1 10-30 and have not had any problem. The whole 15,000 mile in-between oil changes is for marketing ( i would bet on going after the ams-oil market) No manufactuer would say go 15,000 miles on any oil change or anyone with common sense. The only difference in 15-50, 10-30, 5-30, 0-30 etc is the flow rating in which the oil will flow at cold or hot temps. There is no such thing as a thin or thick oil. I would say that there was some kind of blockage. just as a disclaimer, I have been wrong before and right other times. good luck on it :D

Well, all I have to say is I have used over 20 different oils half being synthetic and that SH$T was THIN, that is the only way to describe it. Like I said, maybe it was a bad jug of oil or something, even the manager at Wal-Mart thought it was crap, and said he was going to look into it. It is definately not as thick as normal 10W-30. IF I wanted to waste some money, I would go buy another jug from the same rack and check it out. But I figure who cares, I just won't use it. And like I said I have NEVER had a problem with the normal SuperSyn Mobil 10W-30.

That's crazy, I know for a fact that the oil I got was complete crap. I would never put it in my motor again, ever. Maybe I got a bad jug, but that stuff was thin like water when it was coming out of the oil pan... :notgood:

MACKZERO: I'm dumping mine ASAP. My car is not on the road right now. Just my spring "fresh oil " start which would have come out at the shop when my muffler comes in, now it willcome out 12 miles earlier, NO CHANCES! As time passes and if the oil proves to be a safe oil I would use it as truly my pressure is a little higher than usual.
I'm no Petroleum scientist. Time will tell but not with my motor. I do hope to find some red cap 15w-50. Mark

I know many running the new mobil 15k crap, and ive used the original mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 for 3 years with excellet results. You must have got a crap batch maybe, one way to tell what was the true cause, send the turbo off to be fixed.

Sweet97.... Good idea, can't be too carefull with these things :thumb:

Anconover.... The turbo will get to PTE Friday, hopefully not too late in the day. I will let you all know what I find out. And on a side note, do you think I should ditch the Denso 660s for some bigger injectors?? I was getting 107% IDC with a 37 psi BFP @ 20 lbs. of boost with the turbo messed up running 10.4:1 AFR on the wideband. I turned up the Base to 43 psi and saw 84%. Just worried that when the turbo gets back and I go for 24+ I might run out of fuel.... And correct me if I am wrong, but can't the SupraTT Pump run at fairly high pressure (50 or so) and still flow quite a bit of fuel. Let me know what you think. :thumb:

Well i would say that the main cause of the loss in boost is with the cams!!!!!

I feel that your turbo was introuble before the oil change...and the oil change did the turbo in.
Have you blown off your intercooler pipes off alot...if so that is hard on a turbo.

But the other issues with the low oil pressure are bad...esp when you changed the oil and it was back to normal

I would pull the valve cover and pull a few caps and see how the journals and cams look....I bet not the best

YOU SHOULD SEND SOME THE OIL BACK TO MOBIL!

I am going to Wal-mart tonight to see if they still have the jug so I can get a sample. If it was due to the oil, which is looking less likely, but still possible, then Mobil might have to pick up the bill... allthough, I really don't care too much, just wanted to warn others incase there is a problem with the oil.

Sweet97, when you drain that stuff, check to see how the feels compared to the normal 10W-30. That will help determine if it is "thinner" normally or just my jug I had.

10w30 is 10w30. It should not be thinner or thicker than other 10w30 unless it was a bad batch. But did u buy the big jug or seperate qrts?

Also, u can get away with 660's, i dunno why your maxing so fast but bump the base fuel pressure to like 45psi and lean out the s-afc nicely.

Did You Use any Engine Flush Or any thing?
I Realy Doubt A Company As Large as MOBILE release a bad Product or even a bad batch!
THINK Of All the MILLIONS they Spend on Reserch and Development.

You Had A Turbo Falure After Install. Id Say It Was Installer Error Or Parts Were Defective/ Damaged (Even Doctors Forget A tool Know And Then) ROFL

I bought the 5-quart jug... Must have been a bad batch, they don't know what they did with it at Wal-mart... oh well. I run the MAFT to tune with, I will put the turbo back on when it gets back next week, and lean out the base a bit. We'll see how she runs.

What they did was dispose of the oil right away in a used oil bin outside the tire lube express area and threw away the container after marking it down.Im a Tire lube express manager for walmart so i know the process.I have seen that new crap oil from mobil and i wouldnt trust any oil that says its good for 15k.imagine the sludge 15k worth of driving that oil will leave in an engine.either way, i have a new PTE 5031 and i would be pissed if that happened to me.if it was inferior oil, you can file a vendor claim against the manufacturer. i have done that with Fram 3 times and won all 3.but you have to have pictures and samples.let me know how it turns out.

Ok, in all honesty i do not think that it was the oil that caused your turbo failure. My step-dad was the owner of 7 jiffy lubes and encountered the same problem several times. The problem was that after draining the oil out of the car and then refilling it, sometimes the oil would not drain into the turbo bearing housing, thus not lubricating the bearings which will fry the turbo just about instantly. So he had to buy the customers new turbos because of the mistake. To fix this problem he had the mechanics turn over the engine with the ignition cut for ruffly 10-20 seconds so that oil would move into the turbo housing as the oil pump put pressure in the system. Take it for what it's worth, and i always turn my car over before actual start up after an oil change. -Brandon [VFRacing]

I used to work for a company that was contracted out by Mobil 1 in NJ at there R&D plant. They had some very interesting setups. They recieve every new engine that comes out for testing and have it hooked up in its own room like an engine dyno. They run every engine under differnt conditions, different oils and then tear them down for inspection in a clean roon that would put a hospital surgical room to shame.

I'm sure every oil co. does similar stuff but this was very impresive.

Although I have this "Gold Cap" 15W50 in mymotor due to a turbo change it wil come out at the usual 3k mile or less schedule I already use. I do hope the "Red Cap" 15W50 is available for the next change though but if not I will probably use the extended life on the 3k change barring some new revelation before then. Mark

There is no such thing as "flow rating" for oil. It is called "Viscosity". The "W" in 10w-30 means that in temps @ or below 32Deg the oil retains a certain viscosity. As the temp goes up the oil does get "Thinner". SAE means "Society of Automotive Excellence" All oils go through the confimation of the SAE.

Althought, since you got it from walmart, it could be compromised for the fact it actually gets sold through walmart. Kinda like how Best Buy has Rockford fosgate, but only the stuff that Rockford Fosgate rejects.

Buy a power punch amp from Best Buy, then Buy a power punch amp from an authorized Rockfor re-seller. Which one do you suppose will blow up?

If you look at the back of the bottle it dose not say safe for turbo cars. If you look at the old mobil 1 it says safe for turbo cars. Don't use oil that dose not say safe for turbo cars.

You all have very good points.

First of all, my install was perfect, I am very very maticulous... :) And I NEVER use engine flush in any car. Most importantly, I turned the car over with no spark or fuel to "prime" the oil system. 4 times, 10-15 seconds of cranking each.

There was nothing in my oil system or oil when I drained it, or in the filter. I spoke with Sam at PTE on Friday and he said he was supprised at the amount of shaft play the turbo had. I told him after thinking more and reading what you all had to say, that I suspected bearing failure for other reasons than the oil. He is tearing it down monday and will call me and let me know if it is covered under warranty or not. I am thinking it might be. I will let you all know how it turns out.

Like I said before, I can't believe how much oil pressure I lot with that oil, that is what made me suspect it, also how it felt after I took it out of the motor.... it just wasn't good.

And I have never heard of "safe for turbo motors" I will have to look next time to check that out. You would think it would say NOT SAFE FOR FORCED INDUCTION MOTORS on the front of the bottle if that was the case.

So, you think 2-5 is bad at idle...try wide open throttle and gettin maybe max of 42psi and I mean at 6k rpm...but hey I have been runnin my car like this all year and guess what no performance decrease or knocking noises....oil pressure is overrated

I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever heard someone say that, especially regarding a turbo car.

42 at 6K?? That is the lowest I have ever heard of on a dsm.... Normally mine is above 85 psi around there, but with that oil it was around 50 or so if I remember correctly. Normail driving I only had around 12 psi which is not good at all.

Also, considering you are on a stock setup w/o a rebuild, it might be time for one, no problems is not a very accurate thing to say when your oil pressure is out of spec. with the factory manual.

They have a web site. www.MOBIL1.com. I have my 5 quart jug of the new stuff here, nothing about turbo engines but it has an API service of SL/Cf both higher than required by my owners manual('93). Anyone else have an older container to confirm the "for turbo use" claim? I hope the older version is still going to be available. I did notice this 5 quart was 3 bucks more than the old one.
I highly doubt Wal-mart is getting inferior MOBIL 1. They must produce it in huge quantities. This is getting interesting, let's hope it is all factual. Mark

According to their website the 15W50 in regular MOBIL 1 is nolonger available. That weight is only available in extended formulation. I liked the heavier weight. Mark

That sucks about the 15W-50 being only available in the new stuff. I am switching to Valvoline Synthetic. Screw Mobil 1.... :p I am just playin' but I am switching to Valvoline. ROFL
