Need some advice. Soon I will be getting a 3 inch downpipe and a 3 inch exhaust installed on my gst. I will be running a single resonator and a muffler. No cats. I also have an o2 housing with a dump laying around that I’m thinking of getting put on aswell. Is it worth? Does it sound good or is it just obnoxious and going to get me pulled over? I run a stock turbo right now. I live in California aswell…

Thank you. I thought so too, just wanted a second opinion. I’ll keep my housing stock for now.

If it’s one of the Chinese ones off eBay or Amazon the quality is shit at that, made from paper thin material that eventually cracks from heat and vibrations not to mention 9 times out of 10 the surfaces aren’t flat and the angle they make them is too steep to be beneficial for flow. A properly ported stock o2 housing would be the most beneficial thing you could unless you wanted to splurge on one of the nicely done tubular o2 housings that the slight gain (if any) isn’t worth the couple hundred bucks you pay.

Open dump is very beneficial and proven to increase horsepower PROVIDED you have a way to take advantage of it such as having tuning options. To put it simply, as soon as the gate starts opening (getting on boost), the majority of the exhaust starts dumping right out the gate/screamer which greatly improves flow, reduces backpressure (which hinders this flow) and allows the head to breathe even more (increased scavenging). This means you can run even more timing for the same amount of boost.

Additionally, this means you can actually keep a fairly quiet exhaust system such as a 2.5" resonated, muffled system all the way to the back, while having an open dump. This means around town, the car will be very quiet and stealthy, but as soon as you let 'er rip, it starts sounding amazing and almost makes you think inline 4s sound good (newsflash, they don't). I can upload a video or two of mine with a 16G and a 40mm gate dumped to atmosphere if you want to hear how it sounds.

But since you are running the stock turbo and allegedly no tuning capability, I would simply recommend a 2.5" full system from downpipe to the rear, 1 high flow resonator in place of the cat and 1 decent muffled back muffler. 3" is just obnoxious and overkill for most setups. 2.5" is the sweet spot.

Send me the vids. I want to hear what it sounds like.

From my experience back when I tried an open dump on my old small 16g many years ago I didn't like it. Took away so much back pressure that my blow off valve wasn't as loud for some reason. Since then I stayed recirculated stock ported on both my 16gs and my 71hta. Now on the other hand my new turbo the Fp Xona 86htz with a tial 44mm(16psi of springs with a Hallman pro rx/heavy spring) vented and I absolutely love the sounds combinations she makes! 💯🔥In my opinion if internally gated id keep recirculated. Power differences with a true 3 inch should be minimal.

I have a dump on my car right now and everyone's right aside from it being too loud. It's loud but really not over the top for me anyways. Everyone is different and has different levels of loudness. I live where cops don't care about mods or emissions so it really isn't a big deal for me. Personally I'd run the stock, which is what I'm going with on my other build.
