I was going to put my pistons in my block today but my 1st ring has no markings on the flat side. It was a little red paint on the side of the ring where it contacts the cylinder wall. The 2nd ring had some markings on it, but the first one has nothing, no dots, dashes, or anything except the red paint. I'm using new rings and pistons made by NPR. Any ideas?

What do you mean by the 1st ring? Top of piston or bottom ring? If its the bottom oil ring it usually dosent matter which way you put it.

The ring I am talking about is the top ring. The middle ring had a number and letter on one side which I faced to the top of the piston. The top ring has nothing on it except the red paint on the edge.

First check the packaging, for any/all information regarding instalation. It is not uncommon for less expensive ring sets to come ukmarked.

Most will have a legend that denotes the cross sectional shapes of various rings, and through text or arrows indicate the direction of instalation.

Some rings are rectangular in cross section others have a bevel on the inside that either faces up or down. Most of the time (Note MOST) if a bevel is present it is positioned up if it is on the top ring, and down if it is on the second ring.
