I've had my 98 eclipse for about six months I got a good deal on it and couldn't figure out why someone would sell it so cheap, I mean it was in perfect condition and new tires. LOL. Overnight it started ticking and barley wants to go in gear I have a hard time driving so it's garaged for the time being. Oh and it smells really weird when I gas it. I'm pretty sure its the dreaded crankwalk so I have a couple q's.

1. what exactly needs to be fixed or replaced when fixing crankwalk, and does anyone know how much this fix will cost?

2. And when repairing crankwalk how likley is it that it will come back?

3. and lastly how expensive is it to have a 6bolt conversion done? (I'm mechanically impared)

Thanks in advance for your help.!!!

Well... the answer to all your questions are already posted on the forum. But here's a quick run down.

1. It all depends on how severe your crankwalk is. Make sure to measure crankshaft end play, that will tell you right away if you have crankwalk the tolerance for endplay is .070". A replacement can cost anywhere from 1G to 5G's, from a new crank to a new engine!

2. Well.. that is the tricky part crank walk can theoretically happen to an engine.

3. For you saying that your mechanically impaired I would not suggest you try to do a 6-bolt swap. Some shops might be able to do it but for a high price!

I would advise you to make sure that you have crankwalk before doing any repair. You might find out that it's a more simpler problem than crankwalk!

yeah, crank walk has very specific symptoms.

I bet you have a problem with your clutch system and just a set of noisey lifters.

Yes, that may be it. I thought i had crankwalk some time ago, try to test it, first identify where the ticking noise is coming from, then try to check for crankshaft endplay like the said before, the post here about crankwalk really helped me figure out that my car didn't have crankwalk.
