I recently finished rebuilding a 94 talon na. Everything is all assembled, no start. New starter solenoid, fully charged battery, and good grounds. I get the usual click, but the starter does not engage. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! Im moving to philly in a week and this thing has to run!!!

The engine hasn't turned over at all? Is everything lined up properly? I'm not exactly sure, but if the start doesn't "engage" it would just spin. If it just clicks it engages and doesn't crank the engine over. Is the solenoid you put in correct? And lastly (and this sounds stupid) are all the hoses in the correct place? I did a re-build on a Conquest a couple of years ago and accidentally swapped the brake booster vacuum line with the heater core line on the block and filled the cylinders with antifreeze :notgood: . The pistons couldn't compress the liquid.....needles to say I felt stupid and my parents were pissed when I took the plugs out and ejected antifreeze all over the garage when I cranked it over to get the coolant out of the cylinders ROFL . I hope this helps.

The starter doesnt even crank. theres a single click from under the dash (prob the relay) and thats it. All the hoses are correct and everything is lined up. Im completely stumped. Is it possible that the new starter solenoid is bad? Its straight out of the box so I doubt it. The last time the engine was started was about 10 months ago before i rebuilt it. Ran fine then. What could possibly stop the starter from cranking?

it is possible to get a bad solenoid. I went through that problem with my rx7 before I got the eclipse. If it is clicking then your starter is most likely no bueno.

I had the same problem, mine was I just had a shitty connection to the battery. Check little stuff first. No starts are pretty simple, being that it atleast clicks it points to a starter relay or in my case, poor connection.

I checked the connections on the battery, new terminals, clean posts and wires. Checked all the grounds for resistance, perfect. Checked for voltage at the starter, 12 volts. Its not the starter that clicks, I think its the relay under the dash. If you try and start it in park or neutral you hear a single click from under the dash. If you try and start it in any of the drive gears you get nothing. Is there something else, some sort of connection or sensor I may have missed that would stop the starter from working?

this is not a fix but it will get your car running;take some 10guage wire and tap into your solenoid wire then touch the other end of the wire to the battery(+)remember saftey, car in neutral,e-brake on.I turned my car into a push button start

Which post on the solenoid would I be attaching the wire to? Theres two posts, one battery and one that connects the solenoid to the starter. Thanks.

I just followed my solenoid wire from the solenoid toward the fuse box till I found an easy place to splice(black wire with yellow stripe 10g or 12g).splice first then touch battery,REMEMBER!!!you are making a direct link....if the starter and solenoid are good that motor WILL turn over so dont attach the wire to the battery just hold it there.make sure your key is on or the motor wont start it will just crank.as soon as the motor starts take the wire off the battery or you will burn up the starter.....good luck and hope she fires :thumb:

I bench tested the starter and the solenoid failed on two of the three tests in the chiltons manual. It was brand new never used so i returned it to Murrays. The strange thing is, it was only $25. I bought a different one, for $45, from autozone. That will be in tomorrow, so we'll see then. Thanks guys, Ill let you know how it goes.

Hooked up the new starter solenoid, nothing. Didnt work at all. Anyone got any ideas? It wouldnt matter that theres no headlights of tailights plugged in would it? Thats about the only thing thats not hooked up, besides the radio and the ac.

hey man, had the same problem with my dsm when i went to flash it up on the first go, my problem was there is a little single pin connector in the harness for the starter. trace the harness up from the starter and you will see it branch out, check this connection. that was my problem, sounds like u got the same thing

figured it out. Really dumb aqnd easy problem. Hooked the egr valve up to the wrong connector. Keep in mind I initially tore the engine out about 10 moinths ago so I had a bit of a problem remembering where everything fit in. Fire up right off the bat. Except it idled like crap. It would fluctuate constantly between 2500 and 1k rmp. took a look at it and found a ton of slack between the two cam sprokets. Im a bit nervous now, and still wondering how I slipped timing. the tensioner works fine. Whats the tolenance in the timing belt, how many teeth can i jump before I start crushing valves?
