heys guys,

i finished rebuilding my 98 talon but when i try and start it, the motor doesnt turn over, the starter just makes a load and fast clicking noise.
im woundering if any ones has run into something like this?

heres a my list of mods that i did with this rebuilt;
comp cams, 20 over pistons, brian crower valve train, fidanza flywheel, act 2600 clutch, apexi avcr boost controller, magnus racing intake manifold 75mm bbk tb, battery relocation to the trunk, DSM link, big 16g, 550 injectors, denso 255 fuel pump.

i put a wrench on the crank and made sure that the crank can still turn fairly easily and it does. i also recharged the battery today and it still does the same thing.

i still havnt bleed the clutch yet, so im not sure if that could cause the no start. (my car is rigged to start without having the clutch pushed in) also when i bolted the engine up to the tranny i forgot to put the rear engine cover plate between the two, im not sure if that could cause a no start. thats the only 2 things i can think of that might cause this no start.

anybody have any ideas?

thanks for the help in adance

Vern

Have you verified that you have spark and fuel? Possibly a bad starter?

Double check the grounds. Run some starter tests. That will determine if the solenoid got damaged or went bad.

When you try to start it, does the engine actually turn over? Not only should the starter be spinning, but also has to pop the gear outward to make contact on the ring gear. Maybe the solenoid is burnt out? Take out the starter and take it to Advance Autoparts, they do free starter testing.

thanks for the help guys,

im hoping i found the problem. i pulled the starter out and took it into autovalue and the they tested it, and it came back no good. they said the solinod isnt working properly and the starter isnt engaging and disenaging properly either.

also after reading your guys responses i realized i forgot to ground the starter from the bellhousing to the firewall.

so to night after work i'll be putting in my new starter and the ground cable. fingers crossed this solves my problem and i'll be able to prime up the motor and get her running.

thanks again, i'll keep you posted

hey guys,

so i installed the new starter, made sure my ground in the trunk is good and grounded the starter where the bell housing meets the block and ran the ground to the firewall. i tried to start it up, and the starter turns the motor but not very fast. not fast enough to build oil pressure to prime the motor.

i recharged my battery for half a day while i was at work on tuesday or weds this past week so the battery should be good.

anybody have any ideas why my motor isnt turning fast enough?

thank you
Vern

also, i tried moving the crank with a wrench and it doesnt move now. when i first encountered this problem it was the first thing i checked and you could move it with a wrench and now i cant :(

The plate between the tranny and the block may act like a washer so if you didnt put that back on that could be your problem. another thing to check is the starter. Take it off and make sure all your wires are connected to the starter and with the starter out turn your key over and see if the starter engages. If it does then you might want to think about which flywheel you put on, maybe its not the right size and the starter isnt grabbing it.

thanks for all the help guys, i found out what the problem was, it was that rear engine plate that i forgot to install. i found some washers the same thickness of rear plate, and put them in an now theres no more problem turning the motor over.

now with the motor turning over normally i awas able prime it up and start it for the first time today.

it fired up on the first try :) sounds awsome. i do have a few bugs to work out, its currently idling between 2000 - 3000 rpm. and one thing that could be really bad is my exhaust is smoking a white/blueish smoke. i'll be doing a compression test later this week.

thanks again
