420A no spark

i was driving down the road and my car just shut off. i tried to start it and it wouldnt start but it would turn over. i checked the spark and i am not getting any spark from the ignition coil. ii tried my friends coil just to see if it was the coil and still got no spark. what could possibly be causing my car to not spark? thanks for any help

i also noticed when i would go up a hill it would sometimes miss intermittently.

Check for power at the centre pin on the coil pack harness. If you have no power, check the ASD for function, and continue from there. (it can lead in a few directions) If you have power, check for cam and crank sensor signals, and triggers from the ECU to the coil.

i checked the center pin on the plug for power with a test light and got nothing. im not exacly sure what an "asd" is so if you could specify that and what to do that would help greatly. thanks for the help.

With the ASD unplugged, looking at the top of the connector, the top pin is #8, the right is 6, the bottom is 2, and the left is 4.

Pins 8 and 6 on the connector should have power on them. If not, check the engine fuse/relay.
Pin 4 will have ground while cranking/running. If not, check at the ECU.
Pin 2 goes to the coil.

On the relay, with power on 6 and ground at 4, there should be continuity between 8 and 2. If not, replace the relay.

i was wrong. i decided just to make sure i had no power to it one more time and when cranking it the light did blink. i made sure the cam sensor was plugged in and didnt come loose but what other tests are their to do to check the sensor. thanks.

Did you try checking the crankshaft positioning sensor? Try removing it and cleaning out the connector harness free of oil and water, ect. You could always check the voltage going to the ASD (red/black stripe) from the ecu to make sure it's sending the supplied voltage. As Locke said check the ASD pins with a volt meter to make sure its getting/sending power. If the relay is sending power to the coil then check the coil with ohm meter to see if its in spec. (I believe somewhere around 12-14 ohms) If the resistance is no where around that it took as shit on you. But I'm willing to bet its your cam sensor, check the signal wire coming from the crankshaft sensor (its blue/white stripe) check it to make sure your getting voltage. Did you scan your car for CEL's? It makes life easier....

i disconnected the crank sensor harness and the harness had some oil in on the connectors. could that be a problem.

i did some tests and it ended up being the crank sensor. gota new one and all is good. thanks everyone
