ok so i will start by saying this is my first post and i am a terable speller i tried geting iespell but my computer wont let it open so sorry for the gramer. . . back to my car i have a built engine that i just put in my car i bought it off a friend of a friend. i replaced the timing belt b4 i installed the engine. everything wint fine exept it had a cam seal leaking. i never thought 2 look and i cant see them trew the cam gears without taking them off because they are AEM and u cant look trew them. so i marked everything and removed the timing belt in the car. replaced both seals reinstaled timing belt. so i just got it all back 2gether now it will not start. also my belt is riding on the edge of the cam gears because i 4got to tighten the tenconer pully bolt. so i have to pull the balencer off agen enyways. so wile im at it i will check my timing marks. how wold b the best way to do this i keep reading forms but it seams they all say sumthing differint. the way i hear the most is go off the pins in the cams shold b steght up. and of corse my crank marks lined up. but my bigest head acke is i have no spark out off my coil. i tried swaping the coil off my friends car and still no spark. i dont think this wold be due to timing being off wold it. i wold think it wold still have spark nomater how off it is?? thanks 4 eny help

I don't think he has a 4g63....even though setting the correct timing is the same concept. Here is a 420a link that would help you a little better (bottom). Make sure you tighten everything down to spec or you're going to end up with a broken valve or worse. After everything is lined up, clean/tighten your connector harnesses(cam/crank sensor) of oil if there's any and hook all the sensor back up and it should start. A Haynes/Chilton's manual would do you some good if you don't already have one.

Your timing is wrong. You should have the exhaust cam dowel pin at 12 o'clock (dowel pin up ) and your intake cam dowel pin at 6 o'clock (dowel pin down). There are two holes on top of the cams (if you have your valve cover off you can see them) that should both be facing up if your cams are in the correct position. The information on the 2 dowels facing up is 4g63 information, not 420a information. Hopefully you didn't bend any valves.

This may help you;

2GNT.com - PROPER_TIMING_MARK_ALIGNMENT

And, of course, on Corbin's write up you can scroll down and see the marks on an engine on a stand.

In addition, if you are 180* off on one cam, you will probably not have spark.

i do have the 420a engine and i turned the engine over by hand b4 i tried 2 start it and it spun free so i dont think i bent enything. thanks 4 the help i am going to pull it apart 2day i will let u know how it goes. and i do have a chiltons book but i left it at work and was in a hurry to git my car finished thats ### i did wrong.

might want to check your power transistor. and go over the whole motor and make sure everything is plugged in. and you might want to get some help setting timing. it could save you money if you dont get the right timing. you also might want to replace all your tensioners and water pump.

i looked but everything is pluged in i didnt have 2 unplug enything 2 cange the seal. after i did the engine swap everything worked fine but the cam seal was leaking oil. thats the only reason im doing this agen. it was so much easyer out of the car. i found my exhoust was 180 off no damage was dun. i also found the belt tensioner pully was tight i thought i left it lose and thats why the belt was walking. it seams the timing belt tensioner pully braket is worn im prity sure thats why its walking? and as 4 sumone helping me that wold b awsome but my friends dont no jack im always fixing they stuff. i have rebuilt meny engines big and small but this is my first one with a timing belt and not a chain. thanks 4 all the help

Don't know if you've fixed your problem, but definitely check your timing and re-check it again. Even a tooth off it'll cause bad things in the long run. So you said that your exhaust cam is 180* off? Did that fix the problem? I had the same problem where not only was my exhaust cam 180* off (which creates no compression whatsoever :toobad:) but my CAS and CPS were broken :toobad:

Check timing, re-do if you have to then hand-crank the engine 3 times to make sure it's definitely on time. Hope you get her started again!!!

the exahust was 180 off thats why i had no spark i spun it around and it started up. i am now wating for the tenconer to come in from parts dinisor. i only put it toghether enough to start it and it ran ok. thanks 4 all ## help.
