Hi

I am doing this to do my dad a favor.
He has a 1993 talon tsi awd, he bought a punishment racing fmic kit and some ebay injen style intake for the turbo.

A big 16Gmhi,stock exhaust manifold, he also has a 2g MAF installed, but now the length of it is long and there is no room to put a air filter of some sort.

What is the best thing to do in this situation?
The car is gonna be street and drag used.

Here i have 3 pics of it.

You may need to go with one of those filters that looks like a mushroom, for lack of a better description, but I've only seen foam filters that shape (which I don't like). It's hard to tell how much room you actually have from those photos...one straight down from the top would be good. But there are tons of filters out there of different dimensions, even by K&N (they have a chart on their site), and if you measure what space you have you could surely find one that will work. Start here, pick the shape you want, and follow the dimensional chart for that size.

Another thought is that your filter adapter looks pretty long, and is taking up a good amount of space. Mine only adds about 1/2" to the length of the MAS...it's made of metal and came from Dejon, but I've seen them from other vendors too.

That looks like an intake pipe from a 2g
I tried installing the same pipe/2g mas on my 1g and it was same issue. You can maybe find a filter that might fit? Modify that pipe? I never invested much time because i was just curious and still needed the mas/intake for my 2g at the time.
Dejon and Injen both sell intake pipes specifically for the 1g w/ 2gmas if you just want to go that route

Hello

Thanks to every one for their input. I took 2 more pictures by request. The K&N site is something i am gonna discuss with my dad. To see which one is best suited. There are allot of solutions and we just need to go over them. The depth of it can hold a air filter, but its too narrow for it. He actually wanted to put a "dense chicken wire" in front so that it doesnt suck up big particles. I said NO! :p

Here are 2 more pics. Any other advice is welcome

Do a 90 and cut out where there was that plate that everyone removes, and get one of those headlights with a hole in it.

Is the intake pipe touching the turbo already? Or is there space in between the two inside the coupler?

do the Home Depot racing Mod and buy a 3" 90* sewer elbow pipe and route it down into the fender for CAI.

Cut through the body and mount the filter where the stock fmic used to be= colder intake temps:thumb:

LOL! First time I read it I thought you meant run it through the fender and have it sticking out the side of the car. After I read it a second time though it is actually a good idea +1.

Very nice suggestions. Cutting the couplers wont do, because all of the materials are put as close together as possible, almost touching. That wont be an option. This will involve custom work to it. Or just buy a Dejon intake.

I thank you all :D

I had this same issue.
Try sawing/grinding/cutting the end off of your intake pipe. I ended up grinding down any excess material on the MAS end while maintaining enough to get a hose clamp over it and then I cut off as much material as I could from the turbo end of the pipe while still maintaining a good fit.
That, and I didn't have the misfortune of being plagued with that adapter working against me.

One of these types of filters will work, at least it did with my setup.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? What modifications did you make and what filter did you use? Can you post pictures of any changes and fixes?
