It sounds like your trans is in a computer commanded "limp mode". The first thing that you should do is see if there are any TCU codes.

first of all I have just purchased this car and I'm not sure what a tcu code is so maybe you could tell me
thank you fish:laser:

thanx for the website hook up it is going to help a s*&t ton I would like to see yor ride would be cool

i have a 91 eclipse gs non-turbo and my car does the same exact thing and i got my tranny rebuilt and it still didt fix it.how do u read the tcu codes it will be greatly appreciated.and does anybody have ideas what it might be i was thinking it was either my tcu or my valve body but when it came apart it checked out fine.so where is the tcu located?and how do u read it? thanx

I also have 92 stays in 3rd gear.Ichecked the TCM all clear.I called local shop he says bring the car in.The only problem is I am sure this will cost lot of money.I will be checking these pages hopefully for answer to my problem.

found out it was transmission computer control unit thanks for the response found one used for $200 went right in but today just put the car in for tranny rebuild so hopefully no more problems

thanks everyonr for the info

I'm new to the forum and hope this helps.

If you do not have access to a scanner I would pay the 30 or so to have the codes pulled. It's money well spent. Now, on the front of the trans is an orange wire and a yellow wire. When you shift into first you should have voltage on both wires. This puts the trans into first. When you shift into second, you will lose voltage on one of the wires. I think it's orange but don't hold me to it. when you go into third, you will lose voltage on both. This is your 3rd gear and also limp in mode. The voltages have to be present in this manner. If the voltages are present and the trans won't shift, then I would suspicion solenoids or mechanical problems. If the voltages aren't present, then look for the source of the loss of voltage. Most common is fuses, switches, connectors etc. One more thing, the pulse generators have an exact connector as the shift solenoids. I learned this the hard way many years ago. It won't shift at all. Check your schematics for the proper wiring to the connectors to alleviate that problem. I don't know why they couldn't make the connectors different. I think a comedian thought that one up. There's a blue feed wire to the shifter and such if I remember correctly. Check the voltage on that one too. You really need a schematic for that. I have it but don't have a way to scan into my computer yet. I may have a friend scan and email to me so I can post it if it would help. I am also working on a f4a22 right now for this very problem. I'll let you know what I find if I can find it .
