No noise filter but tach jumps

My tach doesnt work cause someone didnt put the noise filter back in after the great engine swap they did . But the other day it was snowing pretty hard and the tach started to show signs of life. It would jump around but wouldnt go above the actual rpm's the engine was at( guessing based on speed ). I am just stumped on how this could happen do to the fact that there is no noise filter hooked up. Any info would be great. Also are there any other names for the noise filter. And any place I could get one. 1990 Mitsu GSX is the vehicle

I've been looking for one as well, I can't find a new one anywhere though. I'll have to start go through the junkyards when it warms up since that's the only place I've came up with random parts like these.

Its on the bracket on the back of the intake. I called a dealership the other day and they said mitsu doesnt make them anymore. Only place you can get them is junkyards. Looks like I am digging through some snow this week

Your tach will work if there is moisture even if you don't have the noise filter. I don't know how that happens, but I used to not have one on my car and every time I would wash the engine bay, it would jump around like you said. I don't have a pic at the moment but its a little rectangle thing that bolts to the bottom of the intake manifold stay. Just find one of an old DSM and plug it in.
