No forward gears.

I recently picked a 95 TSi FWD (auto). I was told that there was a problem with the transmission but the price and overall condition of the car were great so I didn't mind. Now I am trying to discover exactly what is wrong with the tranny.
The car has park, neutral and reverse, no forward gears. The fluid is full, clean and not burnt and the check engine light is not on. The shifter arm on the tranny itself moves with the selector but there seems to be a little slop in the arm when the car is in drive. I don't know a lot about auto trannies and was hoping someone could give me some ideas of what to start checking. Thanks in advance.

I tried to adjust the shift linkage to no avail. I was able to move the reverse gear to the park position and neutral to reverse but I couldn't get drive no matter how I moved things. At this point, I'm thinking that the damage is internal; however, I don't really know what to check next. Should I pull the clutch pack and look for worn or damaged clutches? It seems to me that bad end clutch(es) would also be apparent in reverse but reverse feels just fine, it engages properly and there is no slippage.
What the fu(k is going on with this tranny? I know my knowledge is lacking but someone please point me in a direction, I don't know what I can do. I will not take this to a shop.(PERIOD) Any ideas, no matter how wacky are welcome at this point.
