I pulled my ECU today and noticed that I do not have an EPROM in it. DSMLink states that they will socket it for you and install a DSMLink chip. Does this mean that you dont really need an EPROM ECU to go with the Link?

u need an EPROM ecu.

http://www.dsmlink.com/faq.html

Where do you get an ECU with an EPROM and how much should I expect to pay? ANything I need to beware... like for example... 91-94's dont work without modification on a 90... right?

Look in the Classifieds or trader. Usually they go for $150-$300 for an EPROM ECU. Since you need a 1g make sure the caps are not leaking and make sure to ask if they ever did.

If you check the FAQ's you can use any 1G ECU, but the 90 had 2 wires that were swapped around compaired to the 91-94's All you need to do is swap these 2 wires if you get a later ECU.

So bottom line is I am screwed? I have to buy a 1990 ECU that has an EPROM? No 91-94 or 2G's?

Should I just bite the bullet and go AEM or any other stand alone then?

You can still use 91-94, just make sure you follow the directions in the above link.

That would be a huge bullet. :)

OK... here is my Goal... this will not be a Drag car... but a few Drag Strip trips once in a while are desired. I would like to run low 12's high 11's... Fastest spool up time possible (this will be primarily a track car). This is not a daily driver so Noise, clunkiness, gas mileage, etc are not an issue. I currently plan on staying with the 14B and getting a SBR IC kit. I want to Vent as well.

What avenue can I go down given that I am by no means a Tuner. I do plan on using a tuner once in a while but would hate to ge something (like haltec) where I have to go to a dyno each time I want to change a setting).

The options I am considering are:
DSM Fuel Management kit from extremepsi(includes AFC, Injectors and Fuel pump) Would need to add the GM MAF and the MAFT (so add another $250) So this would be about $900
DSMLink (Would need to buy an EPROM ECU) - About $1050 (assuming $200 for ECU and the same $250 for the GMMAFT setup)
AEM - Full setup will be about 1800. (Controls Boost so I removed about $200 from the price as it is a savings that I will not have to buy an EBC)
e-Manage Ultimate... or e-Manage Blue... $900 - $1150 assuming I buy the e-01 as the boost controller and the same $250 for the GM MAFT setup.

Given my goals... what is the setup that will get me there with minimal investment and headaches? I am a fan of doing things once... would hate to buy one setup and then have to ditch it for another.

What would you do in my place?

I would go DSMlink route, get a mbc and save the cash for ebc which ever route you choose.

Will a 91 GSX ECU work on my 1990 TSI AWD? The ECU I am being sold already has the DSMLINK chip installed. What modifications would I need to make?

Does that work? How complicated is it to find those parts off a 91 car? It can be any 91,92,93,94 right? As long as its an AWD?

Does that work?Yes. How complicated is it to find those parts off a 91 car? Shouldn't be too hard. It can be any 91,92,93,94 right? Yes. As long as its an AWD? Yes.

If I buy the SBR Coil Plug for a 91-94... what will I need then? It says that its a direct replacement for the OEM coilpack and it plugs in to the OEM plug... Do I still need part of the harness? Or can I hack it with some extra wire?

Does this mean that a 1990 FWD ECU will work on a 1990 AWD? Please keep in mind that I will be swapping the OEM chip with a DSMLink one.
