Hello. I'm a newbie and have been reading a ton about these 4g64 and 63's. I have some probably stupid questions that I cant seem to find the answer for. First off I have a 99 Mitsubishi spyder with a 4g64 and auto transmission. I know, nothing special. Ive been reading tons about the stuff that can be done to this car and really want to but Im not sure about a few things. Is there a long block and short block, how do I tell the difference? I noticed that some of the timing gears are on the left side (facing the motor from the front) and some are on the right side. Why is that? I was reading that doing the putting the 63 DOHC on the 64 is one of the first and easiest things to do. So thats what I was thinking that I would start out with. I know these are some real newbie questions and I have searched all over the place but really couldn't find a straight answer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Long block is a generic term that applies to any motor. It means block and head. Short block means just block. This should mean as an assembly....not just block alone.
4g63 head on a 4g64. Yeah thats been done. Easy? Depends entirely on your skill level. I wouldnt do it as a mod all on its own.
All 4g series motors on 90-99 cars should have the cam gears on the drivers side. Any that dont are either 95 up non turbo hardtop or 2000 or newer cars.

Thank you for the info. I guess Im going to do some
Also know that the 2g NT is the Chrysler 420A engine which is totally different and incompatible with any Mitsubishi engine. All other 4g63's are Mitsubishi engines (1g NT, 1g T, 2g T) and have many compatible parts.

That's where I'm getting confused with the timing gears being on the passengers side. Thank you. That explains it.

If you follow the guides on how to do the mods it isnt to bad.. What do you have for experience?
If this car is your daily driver and youve never attempted to do anything like this before I would have a reputable shop do it.
The biggest reason people switch to the 4g63 dohc head is for turboing the car and it makes more power

a 4G64 with a 4g63 head is sometimes known as a 4G63.5 pronounced and a half. or 63/64 stroker motor throw a nice turbo set up on one of those and the power comes a flowin
