Just moved to AK and purchasing my second DSM. It's a 1992 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD with an Automatic Tranny. I'd never heard of that combination yet here it is. First DSM, to make a long story short, never panned out.

Now, on to the talon. My plans are to completely overhaul this engine as the previous owner has it in-op after a grocery expedition. I figure now is good a time as any to rebuild and learn. I will have the car in about a week or two due to housing maintenance.

Assume that I am a complete noob because despite my previous DSM I most definitely am. The only thing I've ever swapped is a cavalier engine with extensive help. Engine rebuild gives me chills but they're tingly and exciting. LOL.

My question to all of you is this, if you could go back and do it all over again (engine rebuild), what would you have done different. Example, "labeled a certain part", "went ahead and put in part x instead of cheap part z", etc.

I have a lot of down time until I deploy and plenty of funds but only looking for about 400 to 450WHP. If you think I should go higher, please let me know. Hopefully my experience will benefit others as I plan to keep a detailed log of my attempt.

Thanks in advance,

Pictures are good to where everything goes if its your first time. Labled bags of bolts for every part. If you put the wrong bolt in certain spots it will cause catastrofic engine failure. Heres one example (there are bolts on the oil pan that are shorter than the rest to clear the timing belt).

I save to build my engines with all OEM or well known performance brands. Some parts are ok for a cheap price but thats very limited on what parts.

For the amount of horsepower you want, the stock motor will do fine. Just find another complete stock one, or rebuild yours.

I appreciate the responses I received. My main concern for keeping HP so low is tuning. Not sure I can handle that much without tuning.
