It was finally time replace the tires that came with the rims off my buddy's Golf.
I really don't drive the car in bad weather so I decided to go with an ultra-performance summer tire. After spending some time researching the current crop of tires I decided on the Continental Extreme Contact DW.
The prior tire was a 225/40/18 but I wanted a little more meat and a taller sidewall. I've never liked the rubber-band look on these cars. I wasn't sure how a 245/40/18 would fit and might be a little taller than I wanted to I went with the 235/40/18 (a 45 series was just too tall). This car gets driven everywhere so it isn't lowered that much and can still clear speed bumps, potholes, ect.
The 225s rubbed a little on the back on harsh bumps so I needed make some room. The 2gs have a pretty nasty sharp overhand on the rear fenders. Once again, the guys at English Racing came through and let me borrow their Eastman fender roller that mounts to the hub. I wasn't too agressive on the rear fenders but moved them up enough where I felt there wouldn't be any rubbing. Some moderate speed speed-bump action will be the final test.
The wheels are 18x8 with a 35mm offset. They are about flush with the body but sit out a little more than I want. I've talked to a machinist about milling 5-10mm off the hub surface to move them in a little more but I haven't decided if it's something I want to do yet.
Here's a pic of the Eastman tool ready to go (the nasty rusty rotors are next on my list, honest):
