Ok I just bought my 99 gsx a couple weeks ago and when i bought it the "check engine/service engine soon" light was on. So I took it to Autozone to get an OBD scan and it gave to error codes. The first one was "p0455"(large leak in the EVAP system) and the second code was "p0170"(Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)). Also I noticed a hissing sound this morning while the car was running, and I found two vacuum lines near the bottom right corner of the radiator disconnected.....I'm not sure what or where they go to though:confused:(I'll get some pics up tomorrow of the vacuum lines).

Can someone pls help? I would really appreciate it?

I understand that the canister is missing, or that something is "out of whack." What I was only agreeing that based off of the information that he gave (the pictures of the lines, the location of the lines, the codes he is throwing, and the sound that it is making), I'm lead to believe that it is EVAP related, and NOT power steering, A/C, or another type of vacuum line.

If you remove JUST the canister but leave the EGR valve in place, then the EGR is going to continue to try and suck fumes that would be contained in the charcoal canister and purge them back into the intake. If you the canister is gone (or just disconnected) then it's feasible that you could hear the sucking sound coming from those lines.

I only suggested that he correctly remove his EVAP system (and subsequently block off his EGR valve) since it's cheaper (read: FREE) then buying a new charcoal canister or otherwise trying to find the right parts to fix the EVAP system. Plus it really cleans up the engine bay.

No. You don't understand, the EGR is a totally unrelated system. The EGR "Exhaust Gas Recirculation" valve recirculates EXHAUST, not unburned hydrocarbons from the EVAP canister. Perhaps you are thinking of the EVAP solenoid, that controls the Purge Valve.
 
You're right about the EGR valve, my mistake... but regardless, those lines still connect to the charcoal canister via vacuum hoses. If the entire system isn't completely removed correctly, then it would be safe to assume that you could possibly hear a sucking sound from the lines leading to the cannister itself.
 
Yeah, we're going under the assumtion that someone bumped into something with the car, and ripped the canister off before he bought it. The bumper looks a little banged up.

I think the easiest thing for him would be to just buy a used canister from the junkyard, and replace it.
 
After looking at the pics colt 4g63 posted, im starting to think it is the evap canister that is missing. Does anyone know a place online where you can buy a 2g evap canister?

This may seem off the wall for most but it's reality..LOL When I bought my spyder gs out of Ohio, I had a large vacuum leak also....it ended up being the brake booster had a hole in it. Some moron who was tryin to put a car stereo in wanted to drill through the firewall and hit the booster....the whole wasn't big enough to notice any brake problems, but I could hear the hissing coming from the drivers side. since the brake booster was part of the vacuum system, when I replaced it everything was fine, so you could check that out...it may not have a hole in it, but could be leaking
