What's up all? Well I decided to get back into dsms after a whole 7 months of sellIng my prevIous 90 awd LOL. I just picked up another and talon and it's in over all good shape but my shifter assembly seems to be taking a shit. The shIfter Is very loose, trIcky going into 3rd 5th and rev at any rpm. Don't think it's the trans cause no grinds or pop outs. Basically I'm wanting some opinions on what assembly or short shIfter to buy?

you can find them decently prices on the classifieds, a B&M pops up every now and again. Meghan racing makes one as well which is supposed to be pretty good quality and has a decent price tag. :)

You probably just need new bushings for the shifter. Most of these cars bushings are either worn out, or taken out by people who don't know what they are doing. The part number for the bushing is, MB367320 and there are 6 of them total in the shifter assembly. IF you replace them all than the shifter will feel amazing. There is also a plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter where if fits into the right/left arm, the part number for that is, MB307949. One other thing that it could be is the bushings in the end of the shifter cables on the transmission side. Those can be replaced with skateboard bearings.

I do believe your right because I got a pack of these with the car. Not sure which they replace though

The bushings that you got with the car are shifter base bushings. Those replace the rubber bushings in the shifter base. What i am talking about is the bushing in the shifter itself. Seeing that big washer on there shows that it has been messed with before.

^^^ That would be your problem, dunno what that POS is off of (early 89 shifter design? that looks terrible compared to the 91+) but believe me, I had a short shifter on my car and I wish I had never bought it! Granted it was a $15 ebay POS but still, nothing has felt better than OEM with all fresh bushings :) You need simply the OEM assembly with all new bushings and a nice nylon nut to keep it all together. Install that symbroski kit under the base of the assembly and you will feel a nice difference in the quality of your shifts. Also if you have OEM under hood bushings, ditch them and go for either MachV prothane inserts or the brass inserts. I have been dying to see how the prothane ones feel, but they're glow-in-the-dark green for god's sake... :ohdamn:

Crap, figures I'd have the shitty design. I can pick up another oem 1g assembly for $60 of ebay if need be. So the big question is should I buy the new/used assembly and install the new bushings or try to salvage what I have.

You have an early 90 shifter there. If you buy the later model shifter than your transmission won't shift properly. Just buy the correct bushings and you will be fine. Since you have a 90 shifter, the bushing part number is different from what i gave you earlier. The correct part number 90 shifter bushings is, MB580253

Yea it was a 91-94. Sweet, thanks bryan. Gonna order those tomorrow. Chaos I'll let you know how much better the trans bushings feel. Just ordered them for $20+sh. Thought you were b.s. about glow in the dark LOL.

and if you want a VFAQ on how to install them, do a search on youtube.com for Jafromobile, he does a pretty extensive video on how to trim and install those bushings so they fit correctly and work as they should.

You could of just got 2 skateboard wheel bearings for like 4 bucks that work better than most of the expensive cable end bushings. They are the perfect size to fit the end of the cable and over the studs on the shift levers.

Hmm think I'm gonna go pick some up today just to see. Is it a particular kinda or any will do?
