I've got new shift cables from the dealership part #: MB484624
I have 2 problems with the cables,
1. gears 2, 4 and R the cable will not extend enough to put the car into gear. this cable doesn't have any adjustment on it.
2. side to side shifter movement cannot be adjusted to the correct cable length because the adjustment doesn't go down that far. (cable too long)

So it seems that one cable is a little too long and the other a little too short but when I switched them around the shifter didn't move at all. Is there something I'm missing here?

yea I've tried switching the ends at the shifter and switching ends at the transaxle. Its easy to tell the way the shifter ends are supposed to be hooked up because of the piece that goes through the firewall. I'm seriously starting to question whether I got the right shift cables.

also, the manufacture date on the car is May '90

cable I have: EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - OEM Gear Shift Cable: Mitsubishi Eclipse 3/90-5/90
should be the right ones, right?

Well, I haven't really gotten anywhere with these cables so I'm going to go ahead and return them tomorrow and try to find something that's going to work. It doesn't make sense why they aren't working because it's the right part. I'm really losing faith in this car, and this isn't the only thing that's been frustrating. Has anybody had a problem like this?

If I am not mistaken a 90 uses diffent cables. that 91-94. That car could have 91 cables on it due to the fact they are more common The brakets thathold the cables are differnt as well to acomodate the diffent cables. I have a newish set off a 90 if that is of any help.

this is the link that's been really helpful to me for finding the difference between the 90 and 91-94 shifters. Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page I'm going to go ahead and try the 91-94 shift cables although I'm not 100% sure that my bracket is a 91-94 but I'm pretty sure the shift lever is. the base of the shifter I'm not sure about, even with the pictures side by side because I don't have anything to measure it to. if the other cables don't fit the base is probably the odd part. I'll see what more I can find out.

91-94 cables worked. gonna try the skateboard bearing thing and maybe get some of those solid shifter bushings later on. I haven't been able to drive the car due to a starter problem. The starter won't turn the engine over, it just spins. So until I figure that out I won't be able to drive it to tell everyone what happens with it.

the shift cables got me back to where I was before. Still grinding 1st and 2nd gear. after a new clutch, new master cylinder, new clutch fork, new throw out bearing, new shift cables, bleeding everything, and adjusting the clutch.
the starter issue isn't even solved, its now making nasty grinding noises, but still it'll start the car. I've got a lead on what's causing it now, so we'll see where that gets me.
