Recently a thread was started in the General Tech section about an exhaust cutout downpipe. I have been looking into the prospect for a very long time myself and decided to contact a few shops. RNR replied that if enough intrest was shown for a downpipe with a built in electric cutout, they would offer it. I know that the first thing to consider is the price. QTP charges 599.99 for one of theirs for the WRX or VW's. I know this is steep, but if enough people show interest, getting them for cheaper may be a possibility (I haven't discussed this with RNR as of yet). The obvious advantages are the ability to run a stock cat and cat back and at the flip of a switch run an open downpipe. Perfect when you get smogged, pulled over, drive by a patrol car, etc., etc. If you are interested, please post in this forum and I'll keep a list to give to RNR. Also if you have any ideas for the design (such as necking down to fit the stock cat etc.) please post them here as well. Thanks for your time.

And got a this reply:
We would be interested in setting it up an giving you
guys a great product at a great price. Ryan

That goes for all of us I'm sure, First generation or Second. So who's interested???

If it's for a 1G, 2.5"-3", and less than $350, I'm there! :thumb:

I'll talk to Ryan about the options available for the 02 housings and if they could offer both or a special flange to accomodate both. I think that what RNR will simply just offer their normal downpipes with an added cutout pipe and a solenoid controlled cutout flange. Could even just be an added checkbox on their order form.

The cool thing about this is you don't have to spend a crap load on an exhaust. Just leave the stock on, and when you want power...open up the dump tube, instant exhaust.

Another great thing about this is you can run whatever catback system to acheive whatever sound/emmissions goals you want (resonators, cat etc.) and open up for a day at the track or to up the power at a stop light encounter. It's good for getting rid of the DRONE that a LOT of the cars have from running their exhaust systems. The valves can actually be opened very slightly and most of the gas is still diverted through the system and only some is dumped.

well whats up? i've got money to burn!! whens this shit supposed to be out?

I just contacted Ryan again about adding the electric cutout option to the website. Give him time to reply. I'll let you guys know as soon as I know. Until then, just keep the interest up on this and spread the word.

Well I'm glad I found this thread. Just today I had decided on going with an rnr 3" o2 elminating dp and weld a 3" qtp electric cutout inline with it. I figured it to be somewhere in the $530, (339 + 190) range without the added cost of having it welded. This would save almost $200 over the rnr o2 eliminating turbo back system with that added benefits of comfort, "sleeper" effect, and emission, (as well as keeping parents in the dark about what has been done to my car). So anywhere between 500 and 600 for an o2 eliminating dp w/ cutout would have my immediate purchase.

Hi,

This is interesting to me, as I have been fighting over the issue of getting a catback, but one that is quiet enough. Stock exhaust sounds great on my car and the only reason I would change it is for the performance aspect. $500 is a little too much but I might pay $350-400 for it, because I wouldn't have to buy a catback afterwards and would save the money on that and get the same flow, if not better.

yeah me too. i WILL get this down pipe/cutout IF its 350-400 and if it has some kind of "leak guarentee" like that other guy said. the last thing i want is a $400 open downpipe. :talon:

A friend on this board pointed me to this thread, and I just wanted to give you guys a little info on another product out there that may suit your needs. Basically, it is a boost-activated exhaust cutout that opens after a certain threshold PSI is exceeded. I don't work for ATP(or own one of these dump tubes), but lots of people in the VW 1.8T world have been using these to much success. Check it out:

nevermind. im getting the dmh cutout welded to my stock downpipe. :thumb:

Yep, I'll be welding one to my 3" I got off ebay. What could be better than the same flow as a turboback without spending the extra 400 at least on a good catback. Mine will cost around 350 total for the whole setup, downpipe + cutout. Woulda cost me more than that for just the catback =).
