Recently a thread was started in the General Tech section about an exhaust cutout downpipe. I have been looking into the prospect for a very long time myself and decided to contact a few shops. RNR replied that if enough intrest was shown for a downpipe with a built in electric cutout, they would offer it. I know that the first thing to consider is the price. QTP charges 599.99 for one of theirs for the WRX or VW's. I know this is steep, but if enough people show interest, getting them for cheaper may be a possibility (I haven't discussed this with RNR as of yet). The obvious advantages are the ability to run a stock cat and cat back and at the flip of a switch run an open downpipe. Perfect when you get smogged, pulled over, drive by a patrol car, etc., etc. If you are interested, please post in this forum and I'll keep a list to give to RNR. Also if you have any ideas for the design (such as necking down to fit the stock cat etc.) please post them here as well. Thanks for your time.

I'd love to get it. If they made one, and cheaper, I'd be up for it. Even if it was a pull to open/close, I'd get it.

This is my set-up on a 2.5" downpipe. IMHO. With downpipes available from $99-$150, Even if the downpipe comes with the $180 cutout, $599 is still a lot of money. This is what I did with a 4" piece of 2.5" tubing and a couple of hours cutting, fitting and welding, and about $15 of gasket/flanges.

For me, getting a cutout was about being able to stay as quiet as stock. But cost effectiveness should also be a big appeal...

Be careful though. I would look around for reviews on this because almost every butterfly type cutout I have seen eventually leaks. Just ask for some sort of guarantee or something.

i can tell you that it is extremely fing loud...i ran an open downpipe on my car for a while..adn its louder htat hte loudest redneck truck you can think of

Jehu, I know you could build one for cheaper, but it's the packaged deal that would save you the trouble of piecing one together from the piping, to the flex section, to the flanges (I know they are available from Buschur), add the electric cutout section and then the welding. This is a bolt-on style solution for those who want the benifits of this pipe without the hassle of fabrication.

If it was offered at a very reasonable price:
A normal 3" downpipe from RNR is about 240 in stainless steel.
Add a small pipe (negate) and the flange (180) and your up to about 420.

That's quite a step down from QTP's uber expensive 600.

Does this sound reasonable for you guys? Also, I am not sure about the first gen downpipe, but I belive the second gen downpipe necks down at the 02 sensor housing. What do you guys think of a full 3" flange with a stock sized hole meeting the 02 housing so you could upgrade to an aftermarket 02 housing and port the hole to on the downpipe to match the 02 housing?

I would think this is a great idea. I would like to see at least a drawing of what the actual DP would look like, but a very good idea.

For those worreid about noise, dont, thats the whole point of this product. It will sound just like an open DP, but with the flip of a switch it will be just as quiet as the catback you run.

Sorry about using paint, but it's all I have on my laptop right now. This is the general Idea.

i think thats awesome but what about us 1g guys :( :thumbdown

How different are the downpipes? I was assured that if enough intrest was shown they would make it. :thumb:

When I was thinkiong of doing it I was going to put the cutout were the bend is for a quick short exhaust.

I was thinking of this also, but I believe that in order to keep engine bay temps minimized and sound moved, it would be better to move it. I don't think that moving it past a mandrel bend would make enough difference to consider.

well i bought a 2nd gen awd downpipe for my 1g and it fit pretty much perfectly except the frame on a 1g extends down a little more right in the middle of the dp so we had to grind a little bit out of my frame so the dp would sit straight...other then that it bolts right up. not sure for fwd's though

Oh man.

If people buy the right pieces for there car in the first place then there is no need for a "beat to fit paint to match" install. All these vendors have different part numbers for all the different cars becasue well, they are DIFFERENT.

Call up and ask Ryan if he will make a 1G AWD DP. It looks like he is just waiting for enough interest to make it worth his while.

well it turns out the 2g downpipes are hella cheaper for some reason, i got it almost 150 bucks cheaper so what the hell do i care if i have to shave a little quarter sized piece from the bottom on the frame? wow, some people have no imagination, i love when people go out and spend the extra 200 bucks just to get the part that fits JUST right. hah, start modding guy

Start modding huh. Ill get right on that. I was hoping you could send me a list of cheap ass parts that dont really fit so I can start on my half ass ride. It will also allow me to get some more use out of a sawzall. That would be awesome thanks. :thumbdown

Its the point. Not everyone is cheap or looking to do give something up to make somethign work. Sure, you found a part that is close, but for those of us who have built a few other cars in our time, perhaps we are not OK with close. I have seen what parts do when they "rub just a bit", or the frame "has a small notch in it" then they start to fatigue prematurly and bad things can happen.

thats the biggest load of crap, the frame is not going to prematurly fail becuase of a small notch the size of a quarter that was shaved out for the downpipe to fit. i understand what your saying if you have the money then by all means get the right part, but i'm talking for a good percentage of the dsm community where HOME DEPOT is our performance parts store, i'm mearly trying to make a point that a part doesn't have to be 100% perfect to be used correctly on the cars

Perhaps it is, but I am not willing to take a chance that it will develop a crack after a full season of launching the car, becausee I saved 100.00 bucks. Do it right, do it once.

Guys, PLEASE don't make this into a thread filled with arguing. I am trying to gather enough information on whether people are interested so that maybe a new part can be added to the DSM list of available parts. I really want to see this through so please take it to the hangout/PMs.

I am emailing Ryan to see if enough intrest is shown by 1st and 2nd gen car owners to make them available for both. I'm sure that they would but I am making sure.

i would totally be interested...as would many 1g owners that live in my area but see price is the main factor when you have a dsm theres always more you can upgrade and spending 500+ for a downpipe wouldn't be on the top of the list. just my .02 so take it as u will

I contacted Ryan at RNR with this message:
Ryan,
I have been talking to members of DSMtuners.com and people were wondering if enough interest is shown for each generation (1G, 2G) would you guys make them for both. I know not much of the details were discussed at length so here is a link to the thread that I started:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163810
I figure that if enough was shown by each then it wouldn't be an issue.
Please let me know.

And got a this reply:
We would be interested in setting it up an giving you
guys a great product at a great price. Ryan

That goes for all of us I'm sure, First generation or Second. So who's interested???
