new piston rings new everything and still smoking!

im having the same trouble but i got a new head new piston rings and pistons and i bought a new turbo but im a lil iffy about the turbo because it has some play and i found oil in the hot side but it smokes some and goes away and mostly in idle but the turbo is used

I would lean towards the turbo. It gave you obvious signs. Follow your gut feelings.

If everything was broke in properly, I would tend to think it is the turbo.

its no where near being broken in its just weird the smoke comes and goes like in the mornings it smokes for about 45 seconds then just dies down and doesnt smoke then somtimes while im at a red light it starts again

Turbo would be my guess as well. This happened to my brother and starved the motor of oil etc .

Same thing happened to me. It could be the valve stem seals if I was you I would check that out. B
ut I'm pretty sure ## turbo is going so you should rebuild it.. That should solve you problems

Sometimes it takes a little while for the seals and rings to seat all the way. This allows a little oil to pull through and burn, and smoke. You never stated what color of smoke it is either.

I would say the hell with rebuilding the turbo, I would just buy a MHI new one. You could always buy a 16g and run the boost low untill the motor is broke in. You also never mentioned how many miles is on the motor after rebuild. I'm sure you know the consequences if the motor isn't broke in properly, or if the turbo goes out.

i have seen valve stem seals not seat at all cause they were just not installed propperly

cant really tell the color but it smells like oil and this was just a minor rebuild it was rebuilt before but i had to replace the piston rings and the head gasket

Does it miss or anything? If it was my car, I would check the oil and make sure no water was present, then I would take it to the shop who built it and demand several test. They can do several test and pinpoint it closer. Several things can cause this. Its kinda hard to diagnose over the internet without observing it, and doing test. Good luck.

i took it too the shop and they keep tellin me its normal after replacing the rings i dont know im just worried i really dont like the smoke

Are you restricting the oil pressure to this turbo in any way? At low pressure mine used to always flow into the exhaust side while idling and feeding from the oil filter housing. Switched it to the head feed and it all went away.

Did they give you a warranty? A warranty includes total satisfaction guaranteed. Sometimes it just takes longer for everything to seat. Then again, you could argue it wasn't installed properly by them. I hate I can't give you a definite yes or no. Good luck.

try this, take the car on the highway and make a 3rd gear pull up to 5000rpm and then back off the gas (no brakes) and let the car slow down to 2000rpm, repeat this 2 more times. thats how you have to break the motor in.

It's way too late for that. You only get one chance to break your piston rings in properly, and that is the first time you fire it up. Motoman's break-in guide is what I run... it hasn't let me down yet. I doubt his problem is rings though, unless there is an assembly error.

If there was Oil residue on the Turbin side of Turbo, then you already answered your question, Leaking seals dont mean its a bad Turbo, just get a seal kit and re-seal it. Assuming as other's have stated the Head was re-firbed correctly, then that alleviated the worry about stem seals and guides leaking, that would happen at start-up, then go away (most of the time), rings would be fine at cold start then progressivly worse as warm-up and definatly noticable under load. Remove the Charge pipe at your throttle body and check for oil residue there as well.
