New motor makes bad noise. (vid)

Ok, so my buddy Morriss just had the ENTIRE motor rebuilt. It is a 6 bolt with 1G rods and 2G pistons. The head is just a rebuild with the old items reused. Everything has been cleaned and was assembled at the machine shop. This is the noise it makes.

We are guessing that it may be lifter tick but we drove it for about 5 minutes and let it idle for another 3. The noise seems to stay the same but may be getting better. If anyone has any thoughts let us have it. we also have a better longer vid but no host so if you want to here it we can swap over AIM.

To me that sounds a lot louder than any lifter tick that I have ever heard. When we put new lifters in my friends car they ticked for about a week and then they finally quite making noise.

Get a mechanic's stethescope and determine where it is.

Thanks for the replies guys. The machine shop that did all the work told me that they went through the head cleaned everything and replaced all the parts that needed replacing. Well after pondering what this was for a while and driving the car a little per some responses in my other thread on this issue...I removed the valve cover to find that one of the intake rockers in #1 was really loose. That lifter is obsurdly pumped up and wont bleed down. So I guess I have once again achieved piston to valve contact.

Not sure what to do from here. I dont know if I should take this guy to court seeing as he has now messed up my motor twice, and wasted a bunch of my time. Or if i should just cut my losses and pull the head and have it fixed at another shop and slap it back on.

Sue them... If you can prove u just had the work done and its ####ed up you will win no problem. Local shop messed up my friends 3000GT VR4 and said it wasnt there fault, he got another machanic to say it was there fault and he won, got all his money back.

I mean if it was just rebuilt, it shouldnt have done that.

I don't think it's that bad & I certainly don't think it's eaten a valve - replace the lifter & move on to repairing your leaks.

The exhaust cam is off a bunch of teeth. They did the timing belt wrong, take it back.

We checked it becasue thats what we thought at first also. We then took the entire front cover off and checked it again. All the marks lined up. we then made sure it was lined up again for a third time before we put all the covers back on.

I think I get what you are saying JDM, but the problem is this...all the shop did was machine and assemble the short block, they went throught the head, and put the head on. The front cover was all put on by me including all belts, and I installed the motor.

The timing on the car is not off. I guess that the noise could have been made by the rocker being sooo loose. I guess I will have to get the head off to see if it ate a valve or not.

Keep the suggestions comming guys. That way I will know everything that I should look for when I get it appart again (for the third or fourth time...I am losing count).

Just realized that I never updated this thread.

That sound in the vid is the sound of piston to valve contact at idle...

Took the head to another shop that disassembled it and checked everything out. I have 8 bent intake valves and 2 bent exhaust valves. They said that they found metal and debris in the oil galleys, and that the lifters were plugged up with shit.

So it appears that the other shop didnt do what they said they did.

I am in the process of trying to get them to pay for the repairs...again.

Shouldnt be hard, you just need to get one machanic to say they ####ed up and didnt do what they were suppose to and then sue the one who ####ed up.

Suing people takes money that I dont really have at the moment...so for the moment I will stick with trying to persuade him to do it without draging him to court.

Get a lawyer to write a certified Letter, That will scare the shite out of them. and if they STILL dont give you anything. You CAN take them to small clams court, witch doesnt cost tons of money. And hell you might be on TV.
