I just got done doing a head swap on my car. Brand new rebuilt head from the machine shop. I got everything back together today and thought I was good to go. This is the 4th time I have done a head swap/timing job on this car and this is the first time it hasnt started. Anyway here is what happend.

Tried to start the car but all it did was crank and not fire. I checked spark and fuel and I am getting both. I flipped the CAS 180 with no results. After I messed with it for about an hour I got pissed and went inside for awhile. Came back out and tried to start it. It fired the first time but didnt run. Second time it fired again but didnt run. This happend like 4-5 times before I decided to press the gas to the floor when I started it. It fired and ran for probably 1.5 seconds and died. Now it just cranks and wont do anything again. I pulled the spark plugs and they are drenched with gas so I am gonna let it sit overnight and dry out and then try it again in the morning.

What am I missing here?

Try ripping out the TB and dismantling it and give it a thorough cleaning. Replace all the seals in it and just check the operation of the ISC motor. See, after a month of diagnosis on my car (testing every sensor in the car) it clicked that when the antifreeze was cold that the car wouldn't idle or wouldn't start. But when the car was warm it ran great. So noticing that there are coolant lines running in the the TB I just took a stab in the dark and thought something was getting stuck closed (ISC plunger from deposits possibly) in the TB when the car was cold. So I replaced my TB and was amazed that such a simple thing could cause those problems.

what was your battery voltage reading. Dying alternator can also cause all kinds of possesed eletrcial problems.

I have the exact problem you do. I don't even live anywhere where it's that cold. I live in Georgia. But whenever my car is cold it can't idle. I have to drive it for like two minutes and then it finally idles correctly. I did replace the TB and it still did not work. I hope it does for you. Keep us posted.

Hey Beef recheck the wireing on the temp sensor for good contact. The ecu looks for a single from the temp sensor at start up and if it is not there it goes into limp mode . I had the same problem on the 95 changed the temp sensor and boom it went away.

Not trying to bring back an old thread or anything but I wanted to post what the actual problem was to my hard start probs.

Did a leakdown test and I had 80% on the #1. Did a compression test and I got 85, 110 115 125. Pulled the head and took it back to the machine shop that assembled it. Come to find out one of the exhaust guides had slid down into the bore and was holding a valve open. They also had the cam caps swapped (intake on exhaust, exhaust on intake side) which is why my cam was so hard to turn.

Upon fixing this I decided to go ahead and rebuild the entire motor with 2g pistons and no Balance shafts. All is good now. :)

wow thats kinda crazy i was reading through the first post and was like hes got problems with r=the valves sticking open LOL....i kinda had the same problem..... my lifters were locked up and it made me just slightly bend all 8 intake valves... and crack my valve guides.....

THIS would be a great FAQ
