New guy on the block with questions

Ok I'm the new guy here & first off I'd like to say hello to all.But now I'm going to get to my questions.I have a 1992 awd laser,but the thing is my first gear is pretty much shot to hell,if I double clutch first it'll go.But sadley enough I have to start off in second.So know I'm looking at buying a used jdm tranny but I heard that some of the trannys have diffrent gear ratios & that the final drives are diffrent & that there is no way of know which tranny I will get.Should I buy the tranny & try my luck os should I rip apart my old tranny & fix my first gear.I was talking to a friend of mine & he said that I should rip apart my tranny & strenghen my tranny.Also when I'm driving my car on the freeway & I turn on the the vents I can start to smell a burnig oil smell,any ideas on that.Now I have a new problem also,I haven't driven my car in like two months cause I've been out of town.But before I left I took out the battery but when I came back I put the battery back in but now my car barely cranks.My friend & I tried to recharge the battery & when we tried that it still didn't want to start.So know we think its the alternator but if you guys have any ideas please I would appreciate the help.Well thanks for the time for reading & any ideas or helpful hints I would appreciate it alot.

for the tranny, it depends how mechanically inclined you are. If you have the money I would just send it to John Shephard for a rebuild. Your post was a little hard to read so I can't give a good answer about the no start.
