new DSM owner, car wont start, someone help!

hey so I got a 96 eclipse GST 5spd, I bought the car running with the speedometer not working and it came with a switch the start the car(put the car in the on position, flip the switch up, car turns on, flip the switch back down) I was investigating why the speedometer would not work and found this unplugged wire and plugged it back in and went to start the car and started with the key(its not supose to be able to start without using the switch) so I thought that was kind of weird and I went to turn the car off, turned it off and it kept running like it had a turbo timer or something. After it kind of just died about 15secs later and now the car WILL NOT start with the key, I have to clutch kick it for the car too start, I ripped out the switch thing after the car stopped working. I checked the starter and it passed the test so it can not be a starter and I replaced the ignition switch and still nothing, ANYONE have an idea of what to check to get the car started?

make sure you have spark and fuel, you need three things to make a car run, spark, air, and fuel, pull one of your plugs and put it near a bolt or something and crank the car see if it arcs, the loosen the nut on the fuel line by the filer and crank the car see if you have fuel...if the car isnt cranking check every fuse under the dash and in the engine bay, maybe there was a reason that wire wasnt plugged in before, it could have been blowing a fuse and the previous owner was just to lazy to actually find the problem, let us know what you come up with and i can help you from there, i just gave you the basics to check

The car has fuel and all the fuses are still good, if one spark plug is bad the car won't start? When I turn the key all the dash lights turn on and oh, the thing was unplugged so you don't have to push the clutch the start the car.

What did you do with the wiring that was hooked into the flip switch? It might have to do with the security wiring in the car.

I used to own a 1.8L Eclipse, that had a flipswitch, Where is/was it wired to? Switches for ignition are pains. I'd Start with cheap fixs such as wires, plugs,ect. Disconnect anything that you connected that wasnt connected before, Check your timing also, something could have just went bad on a start. Hope that helps!

Sorry for the late responce...the switch went from the starter all the way to the dash
under the switch that controlled the dimming lights. Can you guys be a little more n00b easy, what is timing? I've never worked on a car before so please be specific with things you tell me to try.

Does your car turn over? Your best bet would be taking it to a shop, have them tell you what it is then tell us what you need and how to fix it

It doesn't crank at all...only way it turns on is when I clutch kick it

I bet it has something to do with that ricer wiring thingymagigy. Did you remove any wiring?

I had a similar problem before. My car would start fine and then it would start when it wanted too and then it wouldnt crank at all. For me it ended up being a bad ground. Once i disconnected all the grounds sanded down the contact points my car started fine after that so try that out.

It's alive! =) finnally figured it out (I know it took me a while) I refused to take it to a
mechanic.

Found 10 wires that were touching the firewall, taped the edges off and installed a new push button start, bam! The car turned on first try =)
