Greetings:
Just drove my '96 TSi, Home from my brothers garage. I have a 100% fresh longblock, new trans.. the list goes on. On my first 5qts of oil, I let it idle for 90mins, and the oil pressure is great, no leaks at all. Today, I drove it home (16 miles) and it appears to be leaking, about 6 inches towards the drivers side, away from the back trans mount/motor mount. It dripping, or leaking onto the subframe,6 inches away from the rear mount, not a terrible amount but I sorta did want this build to turn into a junker. The subframe is wet with fresh oil, then , drop by drop, leaking onto my downpipe. its not coolant, brake fluid, gear oil, or fuel. Its fresh oil. It sat and ran at MY house, for 5mins, and it left 3 quarter sized puddles. Is there anything in the back on the engine that could be leaking? The only thing that's even close to where the oil it pooling is the heatercore lines, clutch line, and brake booster line. Any thoughts??

Urban, it's not the valve cover. That was LOL (Professionally Installed)! :)

Where is the balance shaft bolt? this engine has no balance shafts.. and the oil is dripping onto the sub-frame. Almost like an oil leak, from 3 inches closer to drivers side, from the (2) heater-core lines. Maybe when the shop built the engine, they didn't put a gasket on that, is it an inspection cover??please fill me in...WTF

You would be aurprised at these "professional jobs"

I had a valve
Cover gasjet done once and it came back leaking worse then i gave itto them, they siliconed the whole thing and it blew right out.

You would be surprised at the shortcuts shops take. This is why i do everything myself or am watching if i have help

Check for a missing bolt in the back of the block. Im not sure what was there, but I was missing it. After a while it spewed oil out on to my front subframe.

There is a bolt on the back of the block use for servicing the balance shafts. If its not there it will leak oil out because its basically a hole in the block but from the sound of it it does sound like a valve cover like Urbansmoker said. Theres not too much on the back side of the engine that can leak. Mostly valve cover leaks or maybe a cam seal if you run a 1g cam sensor or the block off cap in the same location.

We checked the valve cover, and thers isn't a drop of oil on the back or front of the engine, just on the sub-frame in the middle. And it didn't leak a drop when I let it idle for 90mins, sitting still. I have a feeling the balance shaft service bolt is missing. Any have a pic of where it might be on a 7 bolt??

Thanks:
The weather here in South Central, PA has been pretty vicious, but as soon as the snow melts, and I can get my Talon into the garage, I'll check too see if that RANDOM HOLE has been blocked, or Not..

Urban:
It wasn't the valve cover.. my stuff is pretty nice... but ThankS

You were absolutely correct. There was no bolt, in that inspection hole!!

Found a nice...short..10x1.25 nut, snugged it up, and even repositioned my oil supply (feed) line, to my turbo. (It wud leak like 1 drop ever 5mins), tightened the L fitting, and now... for once in my Life, my DSM isn't marking it's territory.

Thanks to All! :) Happy mitsu-Days. :)
