1G new car w/problems Help please!

I just purchased a 92 talon tsi awd that had a remaned motor in it. it was rebuilt to oem specs by a local motor shop. When i bought the dsm it had a radiator leak and bust coolant overflow it also had most of the freebee mods done, VC breather and MAF hack, egr block. I put new plugs, wires, radiator, both fans, and coolant overflow, i also replaced most of the vac lines as they where old and worn. Problems; 1) white smoke from the exhaust while it idles 2) loses power at 2500-3000 rpm and boost appears to be spooling but never engages 3) idles rough and if left in idle to long it will die. All guages seem to be at optimal in all conditions and iam stumped please help. :confused:
 
at first i thought the smoke was in fact coolant but since the rad and overflow replacement the coolant smell has gone away, i put a clean white towel up to the exhaust and no liquid only a slight brown spot but still had lots of smoke. doesnt smoke much when driving tho. Will do a comp test today as well as a boost leak test. will check T for shaft play. thanx

Also have oil on the bottom of the motor and on sub frame. oil return was bad but replaced it yesterday also new oil drain plug and dipstick seals top and bottom. PCV? could explain a few things?
 
holy bold batman.

+1 on the compression test. Check the plugs as well for signs of burning coolant or oil. typically oil smoke with have blue tint to it were as coolant will be white and smell like pancake syrup.
 
Idle problems are probably from the hacked MAF. Replace the lower honeycomb and see if it clears up.
 
Did a boost leak test, SMIC had a small leak and T outlet gasket leaked as well as my PCV line all were fixed, also cleaned all intake lines and TB. Did comp test all good. adj CPS and idle improved as well as boost and drivability as a hole. Still smoking while at idle and very little while driving, any ideas..... Thank you for all your help!
 
White smoke at idle? May of rebuilt engine but used original turbo? May start to be going out on ya if it's "lightly" smoking.
 
K I think ill replace the turbo and manifold, the coolant line on the back of the T leaks. What would cause the overflow to continuously spew coolant?
 
I have done a comp test and its all good no coolant in oil and no oil in coolant. the local dsm guru told me to replace the rad cap and that the T could be causing many of the problems, says a s it goes bad it can burn oil and cause the coolant to back up?????? Any clues? also i have been adj my timing via CAS bc of the rough idle and cannot adv it to 5* BTDC it only goes to 0* and the local guru said the mechanical timing is set right what can i do?
 
Ok after a lot of reading, digging, and searching I discovered that the head gasket was not the problem with my car. I noticed a trend with the new and unwise dsm junkies to quickly assume that the root of all 4g63 problems was the HG... not always the case I replaced my rad cap with a 1.1 and swapped the T for a new stock replacement and all the smoking and overflowing and so on and so forth cured. Thanx to all the pioneers and adventurers who struggled with their own dsm and provided me with the valuable info I needed to get mine cruising again.
